أَلاAh! أَيُّهاO you البَرقُthe lightning الَّذيthat ظَلّkept يَرتَقِيrising
وَيَجلثوand dispels (presumably وَيَجلو) دُجىthe gloom الظَلماءِthe dark night أَذكرتَنيyou reminded me of نَجداNajd
Ah, O lightning that kept rising
and dispelling the dark night's gloom, you have reminded me of Najd.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَyou see أَنّthat اللَيلَthe night يَقصُرgrows shorter طُولُهits length
بِنَجدٍin Najd وَتَزدادُand increase الرِياحُthe winds بِهاin it بَرداin coldness
Have you not seen that the night grows shorter
in Najd, and the winds there grow colder?
وَياand O أَيُهاyou (vocative) البَرقُthe lightning الَّذيthat لاحَflashed مِنfrom هُناhere
لَقَدindeed هِجتَyou stirred ليfor me شَوقاًlonging وَحمّلتَنيand you burdened me جَهداhardship
And O lightning that flashed from here,
you have indeed stirred longing in me and burdened me with hardship.
وَياand O أَيُّهاyou (vocative) البَرقُthe lightning الَّذيthat طالَhas grown long عَهدُهthe time since seeing it
عَلَيّfor me لَقَدindeed أَضرَمتَyou kindled فيin كبِدِيmy liver وَجداyearning
And O lightning, whose absence has been long
for me, you have indeed kindled yearning in my liver.
