May rain fall upon the haunt of pleasures I once knew there,
May rain bless a haunt of pleasures where I once knew
where the gazelles of Wajra grazed its fresh, untouched meadow—
Wajra’s gazelles grazing in a fresh, untouched meadow.

each a fair beauty, her face like the full moon,
Each a fair-skinned beauty, like the full moon at its rising,
slender-waisted, swaying like a bough of the bān tree.
Slender-waisted, like a bending branch of the bān tree.

Wasting has been my companion since parting from him,
Wasting sickness was my companion after parting from him,
until my body, through sheer thinness, became an alif.
Until my body grew so thin it became an alif.
