I wept for them in sorrow—they were the doves;
I wept for her passionately while the doves cooed,
they mourn without tears, while your tears stream.
He sways without tears while yours flow continuously.

And when we climbed the rugged heights and were borne unguided
When grief overcame us and darkness enveloped us,
through the dwellings’ traces by hardy, swift-striding she-camels,
The ruins of homes and their adornments vanished.

we turned our mounts’ necks toward al-Liwā,
We turned our mounts with their necks towards the beloved's abode,
those landmarks having already taught us grief.
As those landmarks had taught us crying for them.

Though the dwelling that was once welcoming has grown desolate,
If the once familiar dwellings are now desolate,
and the faded traces stand empty of their people,
And the enlivening ruins are now lifeless and still.

yet how many a night there I joined its bliss
How many a night there I attained its bliss,
to another, with separation’s nose rubbed in the dust by reunion.
Followed by another, while defiance overcomes separation.

May Ibn Hāshim water the birthplace of delights there,
The son of Hashim watered the plants of joy with it,
when clouds pour down from his two palms.
When cares are dispelled by his comfort.

An imam whose sword’s edge upheld the faith,
The Imam who established religion, his sword's edge is sharp,
keen, with its hilt in the hand of God.
Firmly fixed in the hand of God it slashes and destroys.

And in his right hand blooms a flower of sword-edges,
In his right hand shines a light like a burning fire,
whose flower-sheaths are armored warriors’ heads [reading an apparent split word].
With eyes on the lands from his abode loftily placed.

Swords: when the regions of their frontiers fall ill,
Swords, when the sides of the frontiers are tested by them,
some become amulets about those regions’ necks.
On their necks are marks which guide like flags.

With every army whose dust blankets the sky,
Every Thursday the atmosphere is fragrant with its scent,
and sturdy, massive steeds constrict its passage.
As the executioner tightens his grip and constricts its breath.

As though the rising dust were kohl for its eye,
It seems the scent of musk has blinded his eye,
and keen sword-blades were the lashes of its eyelids.
And the keen cutting blades have blinded his eyelids.

Birds and beasts count on it for their food,
Birds and beasts take their fill from it when it moves,
when it marches and old vultures gather around it.
As the brave youths gaze upon it.
