وصرتُand I came إلىto دارthe abode of الإقامةِsettled residence والأمنand safety
I freed myself from the burden of enmity and journeying,
I have freed myself from the toil of enmity and slander,
and came to the abode of settled life and safety.
And arrived at the abode of stability and safety.
أمقتولةَO you with slain الأجفانِeyelids منfrom دمعِthe tears of حزنِهاher grief
أفيقيrecover فإنّيfor I قدalready أفقتُhave recovered منfrom الحزنgrief
O woman whose eyelids are slain by her sorrow's tears,
O eyelids slain by the tears of sorrow,
recover, for I have already recovered from grief.
Awaken, for I have awakened from sorrow.
فللهِso, to God سيرىmy journey يومthe day ودّعتُI bade farewell to صحبتيmy companions
زماعاًwith firm resolve ولمand did not أقرعI strike علىin ندمِregret سنّيmy tooth
So praise be to God for my journey the day I bade my companions farewell,
By God, the day I bid farewell to my companions
with firm resolve, without striking my tooth in regret.
As a recalcitrant youth filled with regret over my years,
رحلتُI departed فكمthen how many منof جؤذرa young oryx وغَضنفرٍand a lion
يُروّيwaters الثرىthe earth منwith فضلِthe overflow of أدمعهِhis tears الهتنِstreaming
I departed; how many a young oryx and lion
How many a Juthur and Ghadhnafir plant
waters the earth with the overflow of his streaming tears!
Will water the soil with the excess of their sorrowful tears?

It was not out of aversion that I left the soil of your land,
It is not because I have left behind the ashes of your land
but I feared being buried there.
But because I feared burial in it.

I passed through Shūs, and the stars seemed
I passed by Sowis, and the stars were as if
to be kindled by my thought and lit by my mind.
They were lit by my thoughts and saddled by my mind.

And at Alba I journeyed by night from the full moon of darkness,
I traveled from the full moon of darkness with strength
with Ember-Quencher or Caravan-Overturner for company.
In the company of the fire-quencher or the avenger of slander.

There we donned a white night of snow;
We wore there a night as white as snow
Ṣanabbar's hand clothed it in a robe of cotton.
Which the tailor dressed in a gown of cotton.

We journeyed via al-Bīra, and there rose aloft with me
And we sailed on the open desert until I was carried away
an eagle's wing that returns to no nest.
By the wing of an eagle that does not return to its nest.

And when we skirted al-Munakkab, we did not find
When we turned back, we did not find
a conveyance for us surer of its course than ships.
A ship to guide us better than the ships.

تخيّلُهاyou imagine it جوّاًa sky تجلَّلshrouded بالدَّجنin dark clouds
Terrors tossed us through every sea-depth,
Calamities were cast at us in every cove
which you would take for a sky shrouded in dark clouds.
That seemed like an atmosphere filled with fog.

You see the ships upon its waves as though they
You see the ships above the waves in them as if
were descending from one mountain spur and mounting another.
They were descending from weakness and leaning on weakness.

So I lodged my baggage in the shade of a splendid, noble man,
So I pitched my tent in the shade of the most magnificent ancestor
who speaks without breaking his word and gives without reproach.
Who speaks without falsehood and gives without stinginess,

An imam—the Chosen One's legatee and cousin
The trustee of the Chosen One and his cousin’s son
is his forefather; thus glory is complete between father and son.
His father completed the pride between father and son.
