لك الخيرُ خيرانُ مضى لسبيلهِ

وأصبح مُلكُ الله في ابن رسوله

وأصبح مُلكُ الله في ابن رسوله

Good fortune to you! Khayran has gone his way,

and God's dominion now rests with the son of His Messenger.

وفُرِّقَ جمعُ الكفر واجتمع الورى

وفُرِّقَ جمعُ الكفر واجتمع الورى

على ابن حبيب الله بعد خليلهِ

على ابن حبيب الله بعد خليلهِ

And the host of unbelief was scattered, and humankind rallied

around the son of God's beloved, after His intimate friend.

وقام لواء الجمع فوق ممنّعِ

وقام لواء الجمع فوق ممنّعِ

من النَّصرِ جبريل أمام رعيله

من النَّصرِ جبريل أمام رعيله

And the host's banner rose above one made impregnable

by victory, Gabriel before his vanguard.

وأشرقتِ الدُّنيا بنور خليفةٍ

وأشرقتِ الدُّنيا بنور خليفةٍ

به لاح بدرُ الحقِّ بعد أُفولهِ

به لاح بدرُ الحقِّ بعد أُفولهِ

And the world shone with the light of a caliph,

through whom truth's full moon shone after its setting:

من الهاشميين الذين بمجدهم

من الهاشميين الذين بمجدهم

تعوَّد شخصُ المجدِ جرّ أُفولهِ

تعوَّد شخصُ المجدِ جرّ أُفولهِ

one of the Hashimites, through whose glory

the figure of glory grew accustomed to dragging out its decline.

فلا تَسَلِ الأيامَ عمَّا أتت به

فلا تَسَلِ الأيامَ عمَّا أتت به

فما زالت الأيامُ تأتي بسولهِ

فما زالت الأيامُ تأتي بسولهِ

So do not ask the days about what they have brought,

for the days have always brought him what he desires.

ولمَّا دعا الشيطانُ في الخيلِ حزبَهُ

ولمَّا دعا الشيطانُ في الخيلِ حزبَهُ

وأقبل حزبُ الله فوق خيوله

وأقبل حزبُ الله فوق خيوله

And when Satan summoned his party among the cavalry,

and God's party advanced upon its steeds—

كتائبُ من صنهاجةٍ وزناتةٍ

كتائبُ من صنهاجةٍ وزناتةٍ

تضايقن في عرض الفضاء وطولهِ

تضايقن في عرض الفضاء وطولهِ

battalions of Sanhaja and Zanata,

crowding the open expanse in breadth and length—

تقدّم خيرانُ إليها بزعمهِ

ليدركَ ما قد فاته من دخوله

ليدركَ ما قد فاته من دخوله

Khayran advanced toward them, by his own reckoning,

to gain through his entry what had eluded him.

فلما التقى الجمعان عاودَ رأيَهُ

فلما التقى الجمعان عاودَ رأيَهُ

فخلّى لبعضِ الهَولِ حُلَّ فضوله

فخلّى لبعضِ الهَولِ حُلَّ فضوله

But when the two hosts met, he reconsidered his plan,

then yielded to a little of that terror, his presumption undone.

فأحجم تحت النَّقع والخيلُ تدّعي

فأحجم تحت النَّقع والخيلُ تدّعي

كما ازدلفَ الليثُ الهزبر لقيله

كما ازدلفَ الليثُ الهزبر لقيله

He recoiled beneath the dust, while the cavalry raised war cries,

as the lion, the mighty lion, drew near for its midday rest.

وولى وأبقى منذراً من ورائه

وولى وأبقى منذراً من ورائه

يقيمُ لأهلِ الغدر عُذَر نكولهِ

يقيمُ لأهلِ الغدر عُذَر نكولهِ

And he fled, leaving Mundhir behind him,

offering the treacherous excuses for his retreat.
