كلاَّno indeed فشأنُfor the nature of النائباتcalamities عجيبُstrange
No man of letters has been free of time's vicissitudes.
No man of letters has been spared hardships of time,
No indeed, for the ways of calamities are strange.
Indeed, the nature of adversities is strange.
أُمسيI pass the evening مراداًtargeted للخطوبby misfortunes واغتديand I enter the morning
غرضاًa target تفوّقthey aim arrows نحوهtoward it فتصيبُand so they strike
By evening I am the quarry of misfortunes, and by morning
Yesterday my wants were few, today they abound,
a target toward which they aim and strike.
Becoming goals beyond which tribulations arrive.
وإذاand when انتهيتَyou reach إلىto العلومthe sciences وجدتهاyou find them

And when you attain the sciences, you find them
When you reach the heights of knowledge you will find
something for which sins are counted against you.
Sins accrue to your account for what you describe.

And the bloom of days refuses to let there be seen
The darkness of days refuses to reveal
any share in it for the sons of intelligence.
A share for the discerning anytime they strive.
ولذاكand for that reason منwhoever صحبkeeps company with اللياليthe nights طالباseeking
جداًgood fortune وفهماand understanding فاتهُeluded him المطلوبwhat was sought
And so whoever keeps company with the nights, seeking
Thus one who keeps company with nights seeking
fortune and understanding, misses what he seeks.
Wisdom and insight will miss what he hoped to acquire.

Drought-stricken, they sought the Commander of the Faithful;
He brought refreshment to the Prince of Believers
and his torrential rain quenched their thirst.
When his pouring clouds spread widely and thrive.

He who ascends through God and the King whose crown
crown of glory is bound about his head.
Of glory wraps his head tightly in its ties.
إنif كانit was عدُّواthey deemed حبَّlove for آلthe family of محمدِMuhammad

If they have deemed love for Muhammad's family
If being an enemy of Muhammad's family
a sin, then I do not repent of it.
Is a sin, then I will never repent or deprive.
