وقائلةٍ ما بالُ دمعك أسوداً

وقد كان محمرّاً وأنتَ نحيلُ

She said, "Why are your tears so black?

Though once they were rosy when you were slender."

فقلت دمي والدمع أفناهما البكا

وهذا سوادُ المقلتين يَسيل

I said, "My blood and tears have been spent in weeping.

This is but the darkness of my eyelids flowing."
