A captive of sins, I stand at Your door,
A captive of sins stands at Your door,
Trembling at what lies within me, which You know.
in dread of what You know.

He fears sins whose hidden depths were never hidden from You,
He fears sins whose secrets have not been hidden from You,
Yet hopes in You concerning them—hopeful and afraid.
and hopes in You concerning them, both hopeful and afraid.

Who but You is there to be hoped in—and feared?
And who but You is hoped in and feared?
None can oppose the bounty of Your judgment.
And none can oppose Your gracious judgment.

O my Lord, do not disgrace me in my record
So, my Lord, do not disgrace me in my record,
When, on the Day of Reckoning, the records are spread open.
when the records are laid open on the Day of Reckoning.

Be my companion in the darkness of the grave, when
And be my companion in the darkness of the grave, when
Those dear to me turn away and the familiar friend shuns me.
my loved ones turn away and the close companion grows distant.
لئنif indeed ضاقَproves too narrow عنيfor me عفوكَYour pardon الواسعُthe vast الذيwhich

If Your vast forgiveness should prove too narrow for me—the forgiveness
If Your vast pardon proves too narrow for me—that which
I hope for despite my excess—then surely I am lost.
I hope for because of my excesses—then surely I am lost.
