Sol 6.1

  1. يا من يريد إجادة التحرير

    ويروم حسن الخط والتصوير

    O you who seek excellence in writing,

    and aspire to beautiful script and depiction,

  2. إن كان عزمك في الكتابة صادقاً

    فارغب إلى مولاك في التيسير

    if your resolve in writing is sincere,

    then ask your Lord to grant you ease.

  3. أعدد من الأقلام كل مثقف

    صلب يصوغ صناعة التحبير

    Prepare reed pens, each straightened,

    sturdy enough to fashion fine calligraphy.

  4. وإذا عمدت لبريه فتوخه

    عند القياس بأوسط التقدير

    And when you set about trimming it, seek

    a moderate proportion when measuring it.

  5. انظر إلى طرفيه فاجعل بريه

    من جانب التدقيق والتخضير

    Examine its two ends, and trim it

    on the finer, greener side.

  6. واجعل لجلفته قواماً عادلاً

    خلوا عن التطويل والتقصير

    Give its shaved face a balanced shape,

    free of excessive length or shortness.

  7. والشق وسطه ليبقى بريه

    من جانبيه مشاكل التقدير

    Place the slit in its center, so its trimming remains

    matched in proportion on both sides.

  8. حتى إذا اتقنت ذلك كله

    فالقط فيه جملة التدبير

    Then, when you have perfected all of that,

    the final nib-cut is where all the skill lies.

  9. لاتطمعن في أن أبوح بمسزه

    إني أضن بسره المستور

    Do not hope that I will divulge its secret [uncertain reading];

    I jealously guard its hidden secret.

  10. لكن جملة ما أقول بأنه

    ما بين تحريف إلى تدوير

    But the gist of what I say is that it lies

    between an oblique cut and a rounded one.

  11. وألق دواتك بالدخان مدبراً

    بالخل أو بالحصرم المعصور

    And charge your inkwell with soot, prepared

    with vinegar or the juice of unripe grapes.

  12. وأضف إليه مغرة قد صولت

    مع أصفر الزرنيخ والكافور

    And add to it red ochre purified by washing,

    together with yellow orpiment and camphor.

  13. حتى إذا ما خمرت فاعمد إلى

    الورق النقي الناعم المخبور

    Then, once it has matured, turn to

    pure, smooth paper of proven quality.

  14. فاكبسه بعد القطع بالمعصار كي

    ينأى عن التشعيث والتغيير

    Then, after cutting, compress it in a press, so that

    it stays free of fraying and distortion.

  15. ثم اجعل التمثيل دأبك صابراً

    ما أدرك المأمول مثل صبور

    Then patiently make copying models your constant practice;

    none attains the hoped-for goal like one who perseveres.

  16. ابدأ به في اللوح منتضياً له

    عزماً تجرده عن التشمير

    Begin with it on the tablet, unsheathing for it

    a resolve you lay bare, apart from rolling up your sleeves.

  17. لاتخجلن من الردى تختطه

    في أول التمثيل والتسطير

    Do not be ashamed of the poor writing you trace

    when first copying models and writing lines.

  18. فالأمر يصعب ثم يرجع هيناً

    ولرب سهل جاء بعد عسير

    For the task is hard, then becomes easy;

    and many an ease has come after hardship.

  19. حتى إذا أدركت ما أملته

    أضحيت رب مسرة وحبور

    Then, once you attain what you hoped for,

    you will be filled with gladness and joy.

  20. فاشكر إلهك واتبع رضوانه

    إن الإله يجيب كل شكور

    Then thank your God and pursue His pleasure;

    indeed, God answers every grateful soul.

  21. وارغب لكفك أن تخط بنانها

    خيراً تخلفه بدار غرور

    And wish that your hand's fingertips may write

    good you leave behind in the abode of delusion.

  22. فجميع فعل المرء يلقاه غداً

    عند الشقاء كتابة المنشور

    For a person will meet all their deeds tomorrow,

    at the time of misery, in the writing of the unfurled record.
