Has Hind stirred your longing, or has her inquiry reached you?

Such is separation—its ties and their unraveling.

And she has kept me sleepless atop a well-fortified stronghold,

In Najran, where her phantom journeys after nightfall.

And a reproving woman awoke at night to blame me,

And rebuke me at night—may her error come to nothing!

She claims that if I obey my clan,

I shall perish; yet what could destroy me but separation from it?

For I am truly one of my people when their struggle grows earnest,

Whatever their condition may be today.

And I am surely a defender at my clan’s back,

When their arena lies beneath the long spears,

And the swords in their hands become as though they were

Boys’ cloth whips, and from them comes the clan’s shade.

And I truly detest the envious and their conduct.

My provision rests with God—for the clan itself and its dependents.

And a man’s words beyond his understanding

Are like arrows flying without their points.

So if you have followed Muhammad’s religion,

And kinship’s cords have drawn it away from you,

Then be at the summit of a remote height, upon a hill,

Rounded and dust-grey, its moisture dried up.
