Footsteps resound in the darkness of illusions,

And the thirsty heart's last breath gathers them.

O dream I grew addicted to,

Till it entwined itself in the fabric of my bones.

Then light spread over the blackness of my braid,

And slew the dreams of youth before me.

So I let it pass like a false dawn,

And buried what I had hoped for beneath my veil.

O you, sheathed in my depths to slay me,

What harm would it do if you gave old age my wreckage?

I will teach dreadful pain a dove—

White, cooing in the blackness of my sickness.

And I will follow the beloved's phantom and his fragrance,

Diffused among the meadows of dreams.

And I will teach the traveling birds my story,

Written in the ink of my bleeding heart,

So they may spread it in a forest whose gazelles,

Like me, fear the crossings of illusions.
