O Umaym, how far away is youth! Youth has gone.
Alas! Gone are the days of youth
And my raven's folly has driven forbearance from me.
And dreams have flown away from me in ignorance
أَينwhere الألىthose who بالأمسِyesterday كانواthey were جيرةًneighbors
أَمسَواthey became دفينَburied جنادلٍboulders وترابِand earth
Where are those who yesterday were neighbors?
Where are my friends of yesterday?
They now lie buried beneath boulders and earth.
Now buried in graves and dust
ماتواthey died وَلَوand if أنّيthat I قدرتI was able بِحيلةٍby some means
لأحدتُI would have diverted صرفblow الموتِdeath عَنaway from أحبابيmy loved ones
They died; and had I been able, by some means,
Though dead, if I had the power
I would have turned death's blow away from my loved ones.
I would have warded off death from my loved ones
ماnot حيلَتيmy recourse إلّاexcept البكاءُweeping عليهمُfor them
إنّindeed البكاءَweeping سلاحُthe weapon كلّevery مصابِafflicted person
My only recourse is weeping for them.
I have no solace but to weep for them
Indeed, weeping is the weapon of everyone afflicted.
For tears are the weapon of the aggrieved
