وَأرملةٍ تهوي لأشعث كالجذلِ
ʿUbayda—so weep for him, for guests far from home,
And for a widow hastening to a disheveled figure like a tree stump.
وَبكّيهِand weep for him للأقوامِfor the people فيin كلّevery شتوةٍwinter

And weep for him, for the people in every winter,
When the sky’s horizons redden from drought.
وَبكّيهِand weep for him للأيتامِfor the orphans والريحُand the wind زفزفٌblustering

And weep for him, for the orphans, while the wind blusters,
And for the sharing-out of a pot that so often darkened as it boiled.

And one seeking dogs’ answering barks, who found himself at ease with him.
