After you, there have indeed been tidings and tumult.

After you there was news and commotion

Had you witnessed them, the speeches would not have been so many.

Had you witnessed it, you would not have spoken much

إنا فقدناك فقد الأرض وابلها

إنا فقدناك فقد الأرض وابلها

فاحتل لقومك واشهدهم ولا تغب

فاحتل لقومك واشهدهم ولا تغب

Indeed, we have lost you as the earth loses its downpour.

We lost you, so the earth lost its rain

So find a way to help your people, be present among them, and do not stay away.

So take care of your people, and be present, do not be absent

قد كنت بدرا ونورا يستضاء به

عليك تنزل من ذي العزة الكتب

You were indeed a full moon and a light by which others were illumined.

You were a full moon, a light that gave illumination

Upon you the scriptures descended from the Possessor of Might.

Upon you, revelations descended from the Almighty

وكان جبريل بالآيات يحضرنا

فغاب عنا وكل الغيب محتجب

And Gabriel would come to us with the verses.

Then he departed from us, and all the unseen is veiled.

But he is gone from us, and all that is unseen is veiled

فقد رزئت أبا سهلا خليقته

محض الضريبة والأعراق والنسب

For I have indeed lost a father, gentle in disposition,

So I have lost Abu Sahl, pure of lineage
