تَطاوَلَhas lengthened لَيليmy night لِلهُمومِbecause of cares الحَواضِرِpresent
وَشَيَّبَand turned gray رَأسيmy head يَومُthe day of وَقعَةِthe battle of حاجِرِHajir
My night has lengthened with the cares that beset me,
My nights lengthened with worries of settled folk,
And the day of the battle at Hajir has turned my head gray.
And my head grayed the day the battle of Hajir occurred.
لَعَمريby my life وَماand not عَمريmy life عَلّيَّto me بِهَيِّنٍof little worth
وَلاnor حالِفٌan oath-taker بَرٌّtruthful كَآخَرَlike another فاجِرِfalse in his oath
By my life—and my life is no light matter to me—
By my life - and my life has not been easy on me -
Nor is a truthful oath-taker like another who is false:
No good luck accompanies me like further ruin.
لَقَدindeed نالَwon كُرزٌKurz يَومَon the day of حاجَرHajir وَقعَةًa battle
كَفَتsufficed for قَومَهُhis people أُخرىthe last of اللَياليthe nights الغَوابِرِyet to come
Kurz indeed won, on the day of Hajir, a battle
Indeed Kurz gained at Hajir a battle
That sufficed for his people through the last of the nights to come.
That sufficed his people from other long dark nights,
فَللَهِso, to God belong عَيناthe two eyes of مَنwhoever رَأىsaw مِثلهُhis like فَتىًa young man
تَناوَلَهُstruck him بِالرُمحِwith the spear كُرزُKurz بنُson of عامِرِAmir
God bless the eyes of whoever saw a young man like him,
So may God bless the eyes of whoever saw a youth like him,
Whom Kurz son of Amir struck with his spear.
Kurz son of Amer struck him with a spear.
فَيالَبَنيso, O sons of ذُبيانَDhubyan بَكّواmourn عَميدَكُمyour chief
بِكُلِّwith every رَقيقِfine الحَدِّedge أَبيَضَwhite باتِرِcleaving
So, O sons of Dhubyan, mourn your chief
O tribesmen of Dhubyan, weep for your pillar
With every fine-edged, white, cleaving sword,
With every tender-skinned white sword,
وَكُلِّand every رَدينِيٍّRudayni spear أَصَمsolid كُعوبُهُits joints
يَنوءُbears a heavy load بِنَصلٍwith a spearhead كَالعَقيقَةِlike lightning زاهِرِgleaming
And every Rudayni spear whose joints are solid,
And every soft-hoofed, prick-eared horse
Weighed down by a spearhead gleaming like lightning,
Bending with a saddle like a blossoming carnelian,
وَكُلِّand every أَسيلِsmooth الخَدِّcheek طاوٍlean كَأَنَّهُas though it were

And every smooth-cheeked, lean steed, as though it were
And every tender-cheeked swift-going one as though he were
An ostrich cock, and a lean mare sleek of coat.
A stallion with a docked tail and castrated flesh.
فَإِنfor if أَنتُمyou لَمnot تُصبِحواyou attack at dawn القَومَthe people غارَةًa raid
يُحَدِّثُrecounts عَنهاabout it وارِدٌone coming to water بَعدَafter صادِرِone leaving the water
For if you do not fall upon those people in a dawn raid,
And if you do not make the people a morning raid
Whose tale newcomers to the water recount after those departing,
Of which a later arrival tells the tale,
وَتَرمواand you strike عُقَيلاًUqayl بِالَّتيwith that which لَيسَthere is no بَعدَهاafter it
بَقاءَsurvival فَكونواthen be كَالإِماءِlike slave women العَوائِرِblear-eyed
And strike Uqayl with a blow after which there is
And throw Uqail what comes after which there is no
No survival, then be like blear-eyed slave women.
Survival, then be like sheltered slave-girls.
