Truly, at al-Bayḍāʾ, on the edge of the protected pasture, there died
Indeed, at al-Bayda, beside the protected pasture, there died
a young man who was the glory of cavalcades and drinking companions.
a youth who graced processions and companies of drinkers.
يَلوذُseeks refuge بهِwith him الجانيthe wrongdoer مَخافةَfor fear of ماwhat جَنىhe committed
يَلوذُ بهِ الجاني مَخافةَ ما جَنى
كَماjust as لاذتِsought refuge العَصماءُthe white-footed mountain goat بالشاهقِon the towering peak الصعبِinaccessible
كَما لاذتِ العَصماءُ بالشاهقِ الصعبِ
The wrongdoer would seek refuge in him, for fear of what he had done,
The wrongdoer would seek refuge with him, fearing what he had done,
as the white-legged she-ibex sought refuge on the forbidding peak.
as the white-footed mountain goat sought refuge on the towering, inaccessible peak.

His cousins on his father’s and mother’s sides remain around him,
His paternal and maternal female cousins remain around him,
parched, never drinking their fill of cool, sweet water.
parched, their thirst unquenched by cool, sweet water.

With their palms they heap earth upon him,
They heap moist earth upon him with their palms,
though it is from no hatred that dust is cast over him.
and it is not out of hatred that dust is scattered upon him.
