Is all that befalls your young men to be borne

while you are men as numberless as ants?

While ʿAfīrah walks by broad daylight amid blood,

openly, and is led among the women in bridal procession to a husband?

Had we been men, and you

women, we would never have countenanced such a deed.

    ودبوا لنار الحرب بالحطب الجزل

    Then die with honor, or put your enemy to death;

advance upon war’s fire with stout logs.

Otherwise, quit its heartland and journey on

to a barren country, and die there of emaciation.

For death is better than remaining under injury,

and death is better than remaining in humiliation.

And if, after this, you still do not grow angry,

then be women, who are not faulted for wearing kohl.

Here, take the bride’s perfume; for truly

you were created for bridal garments and washing.

Banishment and utter ruin upon him who will not defend,

and yet struts among us with the gait of a stallion.
