What ails the doves, that they have lamented above the branches?
Why do the doves moan above the branches?
Indeed, they have stirred the tears of a lover wasting away.
Indeed, the fleeting union has aroused their weeping.

تملي فنون الهوى من فوق أفنان
A sleepless gray dove stood upon the spreading trees,
Restless she stood tall upon the sand dune,
Reciting the many forms of love from above the boughs.
Dictating to me the arts of love from above the dunes.

Enough for me and you is the sorrow you have stirred;
It is enough what you have provoked of yearning,
For your sorrow is not equal to mine.
For your longing is no match for mine.

I have longing like yours, multiplied many times,
My passion for you is manifold and amplified,
And my body's weakness is the strongest of all proofs.
And my frail body is stronger than any proof.

You belong neither to the spreading trees, nor to longing, nor to love,
You are neither for the sand dune, nor for yearning, nor for love,
So long as you do not conceal longing as I conceal it.
As long as you do not confide the passion confidentially to me.

Indeed, the doves sleep in the hours before dawn,
The doves at dawn are restless,
While the one who longs has found no ease in my solace.
While the lover has not enjoyed tranquility.

While you recite to me only rhythm with melodies.

I almost shine in my tears due to excessive weeping,
As though my eyes, shedding tears, were two springs.
As if my eyes in shedding tears are two eyes.

My anxiety for him a prisoner for so long
He was ceaselessly moved from one prison to another.
Who still moves from one prison to another.

They dragged him while he prayed willfully to his Creator,
So they opposed God in disbelief and tyranny.
So they harbored enmity against God in blasphemy and tyranny.

They walked him in shackles, chaining him,
And they committed what the house of Sufyan had committed.
And they committed what the clan of Sufyan committed.

Ask about Jesus' imprisonment and the tribulations he faced therein,

The injustice and hostility he endured.

Suffering exhausted him there, from moment to moment!
Misery from one moment to the next exhausted him.

For mentioning him broke my heart and grieved me.
For the mention of it caused agony in my heart and made me grieve.

And does not see the dawn in light and clarity.

In fact far from encountering any human.

The deadly deed made him change colors.

And no family or neighbors drew near him.
With no family or neighbors drawing near him.

Where, then, are the troops of Adnan's house to attend him?
Where then are the battalions of the clan of Aden?

No one, far or near, gathered to honor him.
Yet for him no storyteller or newborn attended.

Dumbfounded, faltering of mind, confused.

So let them avenge him and put an end to the culprit.
To avenge him and punish the perpetrator?

Yet the cloak is of the greatest stature.
