فنازعتنيthen they struggled against me بقاياremnants الروحthe soul فيin الجسدthe body
She directed her first glance toward my liver,
Her first glance pierced my inner being
And the remnants of the soul within my body struggled against me.
And wrestled the remnants of life within my body
تقلدتshe girded on صارمa keen sword الأجفانthe eyelids واجتهدتand she strove
فيin قتلتيkilling me فأصابتand she gained فضلthe merit مجتهدone who strives
She girded on the keen sword of her eyelids and strove
I feigned sleeping though watchful
To kill me, earning the merit of one who strives.
In my ruin she succeeded, the diligent one
جارتshe acted unjustly عليtoward me وماجادتand she was not generous بنظرتهاwith her glance
وماand what علىupon الغيدgraceful beauties إنif جارتshe acted unjustly ولمand did not تجدgive generously
She wronged me and withheld her glance,
She was unkind though her glance did not inflict
And what blame falls on graceful beauties if they are unjust and ungenerous?
No blame on the necklace if it adorns yet finds no merit
أشكوI complain إلىto اللهGod عينيهاher two eyes بماfor what فعلتshe did
وللغصونand to the boughs بماof what تأتيهshe does it منof ميدswaying
I complain to God of her eyes for what she has done,
I complain to God about her eyes and what they have done
And to the boughs, of the way she sways.
And to the branches for what comes to them gently swaying
أنif أشكI complain للغصنto the bough منهاof her فعلهاher deed فلقدthen indeed
شكوتI complained منof غصنa bough ندٍa peer لهto it ونديand my rival
If I complain to the bough of her deeds, then indeed
That I complain to the branch for her deeds, I have
I have complained of a bough that is its peer and my rival.
Complained of a tender branch though myself tenderer
إنيindeed I لأنشرI surely spread بالشكوىthrough complaint محاسنهاher charms
ولاand not أبيتنI shall spend the night مطوياfolded up علىover كمدgrief
Indeed, through complaint I proclaim her charms,
In complaining I extol her charms
Nor shall I spend the night with grief folded within me.
Nor muffled in blankets do I pass the nights

Oh, my burning heart! Can anything quench its blaze but
Aflame is my heart, what can extinguish its blaze
Cool, dusky lips and a lovely mouth like hailstones?
Except the coolness of rain and lips like hail

She revealed to two eyes, within his cheek,
Radiant are the two eyes amid her cheeks
A freshly plucked rose—yet my hand has not plucked it.
Pink blossoms, but picked by none but my dreams

فكمso how many غدtomorrow كذبتshe lied فيهabout it وبعدand after غدtomorrow
She has broken her promise to me more than once:
She has broken promise after promise
How often she lied about 'tomorrow'—and 'the day after tomorrow'!
Many morrows she lied in and many more yet to come
