أخلفتِ يا جيهانُ وعدي

فالقلبُ مضطرمٌ بكمْدِ

فوقفتُ منتظرًا بلا

أملٍ يصبِّرني فيُجْدي

أملٍ يصبِّرني فيُجْدي

So I stood waiting, without

I stood waiting without any

A hope to give me patience and bring relief.

Hope to console me and avail

أخلفتِ وعدي فانبَرى

أخلفتِ وعدي فانبَرى

دمعي يحرِّقُني بزنْدِ

دمعي يحرِّقُني بزنْدِ

You broke the promise made to me, and forth sprang

You broke your promise so my tears

My tears, burning me with a firestick.

Burn me with intense ardour

ما كنتُ أعلمُ أنَّنا

ما كنتُ أعلمُ أنَّنا

يومًا إلى نأيٍ مُعَدِّ

يومًا إلى نأيٍ مُعَدِّ

I never knew that we

I did not know that one day

Would one day be destined for separation.

We would drift so far apart

إنِّي وإنْ تنأَيْ فلا

إنِّي وإنْ تنأَيْ فلا

أنفكُّ في الأشواقِ تُبدي

أنفكُّ في الأشواقِ تُبدي

Indeed, though you keep your distance, I do not

Though you distance yourself, still

Cease amid the longings you reveal.

I cannot cease expressing longing

خلَّفتِني في وحدتي

خلَّفتِني في وحدتي

بعدَ الحديثِ بكلِّ وُدِّ

بعدَ الحديثِ بكلِّ وُدِّ

You left me in my solitude

You left me in my solitude

After talk full of affection.

After affectionate words of love

وضربتِ لي وعدَ اللِّقا

وضربتِ لي وعدَ اللِّقا

ءِ فلم يكنْ يومًا بجِدِّ

ءِ فلم يكنْ يومًا بجِدِّ

And you promised me a meeting,

And made me a false promise

Yet it was never once in earnest.

Of meeting that was never true

وبقيتُ وحدي راصدًا

وبقيتُ وحدي راصدًا

منكِ اللِّقاءَ بفرْطِ وجْدي

منكِ اللِّقاءَ بفرْطِ وجْدي

And I remained alone, watching for

And I remained alone watching

A meeting with you, in my overwhelming longing.

For you, overflowing with fervour

إنَّ الحديثَ عنِ الهوى

إنَّ الحديثَ عنِ الهوى

أشجَى اللَّهيبَ بغيرِ بُعدِ

أشجَى اللَّهيبَ بغيرِ بُعدِ

Indeed, talk of love

Speaking of passion makes

Made the flame sorrowful, even without separation.

The flames fiercer without distance

فظَللتُ أبكي فُرقتي

فظَللتُ أبكي فُرقتي

دمعًا شجيًّا دُونَ رَدِّ

دمعًا شجيًّا دُونَ رَدِّ

So I kept weeping over my parting,

So I wept over our separation

Sorrowful tears, with no reply,

With copious, burning tears

مِن بضَّةٍ فتانةٍ

مِن بضَّةٍ فتانةٍ

تبدو الخُدودُ كلَونِ وَردِ

تبدو الخُدودُ كلَونِ وَردِ

From a tender-skinned enchantress,

Of a charming, bewitching one

Whose cheeks appear rose-colored;

Whose cheeks show the hue of roses

قتَّالةٍ في عينِها

قتَّالةٍ في عينِها

سِحرٌ يفيضُ كسَهمِ بُدِّ

سِحرٌ يفيضُ كسَهمِ بُدِّ

A slayer, in whose eye

A lethal one, in her eyes

Magic overflows like an idol's arrow;

Is magic overflowing like arrows

وبحالكٍ مثلِ الدُّجَى

وبحالكٍ مثلِ الدُّجَى

يهفو فُوَيْقَ المتنِ يُنْدي

يهفو فُوَيْقَ المتنِ يُنْدي

And with hair as black as night's darkness,

And in your state like the darkness

Fluttering just above her back, shedding dew;

The breeze of the tracts calls plaintively

وبخطوةٍ تشكو لها

وبخطوةٍ تشكو لها

تللك البسِيطةُ عند عَدِّ

تللك البسِيطةُ عند عَدِّ

And with a step to which

And with a gait that complains

That earth complains when steps are counted;

The plains tell of your count

وفمٍ كأنَّ رُضابَه

وفمٍ كأنَّ رُضابَه

لو ما شربتُ كطعمِ شَهدِ

لو ما شربتُ كطعمِ شَهدِ

And a mouth whose saliva seems,

And a mouth that if I never drank

Even if I have not drunk it, like the taste of honey;

Its taste is like honey sweet

وعوارضٍ مصقولةٍ

وعوارضٍ مصقولةٍ

تبدو كسيفٍ بينَ غِمدِ

تبدو كسيفٍ بينَ غِمدِ

And polished teeth

And well-formed eyebrows

That appear like a sword within a sheath;

That look like a sword in its sheath

ولطيفِ كشحٍ ناعمٍ

ولطيفِ كشحٍ ناعمٍ

وبدِلَّةٍ وبديعِ قدِّ

وبدِلَّةٍ وبديعِ قدِّ

And a delicate, soft waist,

And gentle, delicate charm

And with coy charm and an exquisite figure;

And wonderful composure and grace

وبِرقَّةٍ أودَتْ فؤا

وبِرقَّةٍ أودَتْ فؤا

دي فاسبكَرَّ لطُولِ شرْدِ

دي فاسبكَرَّ لطُولِ شرْدِ

And with a tenderness that destroyed my heart,

And with a tenderness that almost

So it lengthened through prolonged wandering.

Ruined me, so I wandered distraught

صارحتُها بِتَعَذُّبي

صارحتُها بِتَعَذُّبي

في حبِّها عند التَّردِّي

في حبِّها عند التَّردِّي

I spoke frankly to her of my torment

I confessed to her my torment

In loving her, as I fell into ruin.

In loving her when dejected

فتردَّدَتْ في رَيْبِها

فتردَّدَتْ في رَيْبِها

وتأمَّلتْ هزْلي وجدِّي

وتأمَّلتْ هزْلي وجدِّي

So she hesitated in her doubt

She hesitated in her doubt

And pondered my jesting and my earnestness;

And considered my fervour and ardour

وقطيعِ رئمٍ حولنا

وقطيعِ رئمٍ حولنا

ينظرنَ منِّي فيضَ سُهدي

ينظرنَ منِّي فيضَ سُهدي

And a herd of gazelles around us

And the flock of censurers around

Watches the flood of my sleeplessness pour from me.

Watching my overflowing love

لكنَّني سأظلُّ مُنـ

لكنَّني سأظلُّ مُنـ

ـتظرًا برغمِ طويلِ بُعدِ

ـتظرًا برغمِ طويلِ بُعدِ

But I shall remain

But still I will remain

Waiting, despite the long separation.
