سلامٌpeace علىupon تلكthose الدِّيارِthe abodes وأهلِهاand their inhabitants
ومَنand whoever حلَّlodged فيهاin them مِنamong مقيمٍa resident وظاعنِand one departing
Peace be upon those abodes and their people,
And whoever has lodged there, resident or departing;
وأخدارِand the secluded chambers of آرامٍgazelles شُغِفتُI was enthralled بحبِّهاby love for them
فخلَّفنso they left behind قلبيmy heart بينbetween صبٍّa lovesick lover وحائنِand one doomed to die
And upon the secluded chambers of gazelles, whose love has enthralled me.
So they left my heart between lovesickness and death.
بعثنthey sent forth سهامَthe arrows of العينِthe eye تخطِرُswaying بالقناwith lances
فأجرينَso they made flow دمعَthe tears of الهادياتِthe guiding ones الهواتنِthe steadily streaming ones
They sent the eye's arrows swaying with lances,
So they made the guiding ones' tears pour steadily.
ألستَare you not ترانيseeing me ساهمَhaggard الطَّرفin gaze شاحبًاpale
أعدُّI count نجومَthe stars of اللَّيلِthe night خلفَbehind الظعائنِthe women in litters
Do you not see me, haggard-eyed and pale,
Counting the stars of night behind the women in their litters?
طَرَقْنَthey struck بسهمِwith the arrow of العينِthe eye قلبيmy heart فلمso it did not يَزَلْcease
يكابدُstruggles with أشواقَthe longings of المحبِّthe lover المهادنِthe conciliatory one
They struck my heart with the eye's arrow, and it has not ceased
Struggling with the longings of a conciliatory lover.
فعالجنَنِيso they treated me مِنfrom أوَّلِthe beginning of الليلthe night نظرةًa glance
قطعتُI passed بهاwith it ليلًاa night طويلlong المراسنِthe muzzles
So they treated me, from the beginning of night, with a glance,
With which I passed a long-muzzled night.
برزنَthey emerged مِنfrom الأخدارِthe secluded chambers ثُمَّthen ولَجْنَهاthey entered them
فألقينَso they cast قلبيmy heart بينamid جمِّa profusion of المفاتنِthe charms
They emerged from the secluded chambers, then entered them,
So they cast my heart amid a profusion of charms.
أناI الحضريُّal-Hadari الصَّبُّthe lovesick lover أرْدَتْهhas laid him low غُلَّةٌa burning thirst
مِنَof الشَّوقlonging تجلوunveils عنfrom نُحورِthe upper chests of البهاكنِthe soft, full-bodied women
I am al-Hadari, the lovesick one, laid low by a burning thirst
Of longing that lays bare the bosoms of soft, full-bodied women.
فرفقًاso be gentle بهذاwith this القلبheart ياO قومpeople إنماit is only that
مضـىhas gone away بِسَناهwith its radiance كلُّevery أحورَdark-eyed شادنِyoung gazelle
So be gentle with this heart, O people; it is only that
Every dark-eyed young gazelle has carried away its radiance.
فأقسمتُso I swore بالرَّحمنِby the Most Merciful فاطرِcreator of حسنِهاher beauty
ألمَّتْhas touched بهذاthis القلبِheart نظرةُthe glance of ماكنِone firmly established
So I swore by the Most Merciful, creator of her beauty:
A glance from one firmly established has touched this heart.
فمَنwho, then مُبْلِغٌwill convey عنيon my behalf علىin الغيبabsence مألُكًاa message
بفَيضِof the overflowing abundance of هواهاlove for her بينamid تلكthose المحاسنِcharms
Who, then, will convey a message on my behalf in my absence,
Of overflowing love for her amid those charms?
هوit is الحبُّlove أردانيhas laid me low فماso what أناI صانعٌto do
وليسand is not غويُّthe wayward one القلبِin heart منهfrom it بآمِنِsafe
It is love that has laid me low—what, then, can I do?
And the wayward of heart is not safe from it.
وإنْand if تسأليyou ask صِدقَthe sincerity of العهودِthe pledges فإننيthen indeed I
صدوقٌtruthful وفيُّfaithful to العهدِthe pledge لستُI am not بخائنِa betrayer
And if you ask about the sincerity of pledges, I am indeed
Truthful and true to my pledge; I am no betrayer.
I became love-distraught for her مِنfrom بعدِafter يومٍa day وليلةٍand a night
فدَعْso leave off عنكَfrom yourself تَسآليquestioning me بتلكwith those الضغائنِgrudges
I became distraught with love for her after a day and a night.
So stop questioning me with those grudges.
فلوso if كانتِwere الصَّحراءُthe desert تَفصلُseparates بينَناbetween us
ومِنand on دونِهاthis side of it الأنهارُthe rivers بينbetween المدائنِthe cities
So if the desert were to separate us,
And on this side of it lay rivers between the cities,
لجاوزتُهاI would cross it غيرَwithout اتِّقاءٍguarding myself لِهُلْكَةٍagainst destruction
تُلِمُّbefalls بناupon us مِنon دونِthis side of تلكthose القواطنِresident women
I would cross it, without guarding against destruction
That might befall us before we reached those women who dwell there.
