تَطاولَgrew long ليليmy night فلمso did not أصطبرْI endure patiently
وبتُّand I spent the night شجيًّاsorrowful فلمso did not أدَّثرْI wrap myself up
My night grew long, and I could not endure;
My night grew long, and I could bear no more
And I spent it sorrowful, without wrapping myself up.
I tossed in anguish, wrapped not in my gown
وكيفand how وقدand already عاورَتنيbeset me in turn شجونٌsorrows
تفتُّgrind الأسىanguish بفؤاديin my heart الوَجِرْfearful
And how could I, when sorrows beset me in turn,
How not, when grief assailed my soul so sore?
Grinding anguish within my fearful heart?
And sorrow clutched my aching heart in pangs
ذكرتُI recalled وصالَكِunion with you قبلbefore النَّوىseparation
وقبلand before أقاويلِtales واشٍa slanderer دُحِرْwas driven away
I recalled union with you before separation,
I thought of our union, ere we said farewell
And before the tales of a slanderer who was driven away.
Ere slanderers could their lies ‘gainst us propound
ففاضتso overflowed دموعيmy tears وبانand departed الكَرَىslumber
وأمكَنَand gained mastery منِّيover me الجوىheartache فاستمَرّْso persisted
Then my tears overflowed, and slumber departed,
Then flowed my tears, my longing plain to tell
And heartache took hold of me and persisted.
And my affliction made itself full clear
صدَقتُI was true to الهوىlove وطرقتُand I knocked at المنىhopes
فدانتso they drew near إليَّto me بماwith what أنتظرْI await
I was true to love and knocked at hope's door,
Love’s truth I told, called out my heart’s demand
So my hopes drew near to me with what I awaited.
You came to me with all that I held dear
وماand not العيشُlife إلاexcept وصالٌunion وهجرٌand estrangement
وقبضٌand constriction وبسطٌand expansion وكرٌّand advance وفَرّْand retreat
Life is nothing but union and estrangement,
For life is but reunion and farewell
And constriction and expansion, advance and retreat.
Giving and taking, fortune good or bad
فمِنso from كلِّall ذلكthat ماwhat نالtouched قلبيmy heart
فعينٌso one eye تفيضُoverflows وأخرىand another تَقَرّْrests content
So my heart has had its share of all of that:
Of all of this, so much my heart befell
One eye overflows, while the other rests content.
One eye flows free, the other stays unsad
فأمَّاso as for التيthe one that هيit فاضتoverflowed فإنيthen I
أذكِّرُهاI remind it الصبرَpatience فيمنamong those who صبَرْendured
As for the one that overflowed, I
The flowing one, to patience I exhort
Remind it of patience, among those who endured;
The dry one, unto fate I give accord
وأمَّاand as for التيthe one that هيit قرَّتrested content فإنيthen I
أذكِّرُهاI remind it الدهرَtime فيمنamong those who ذكَرْremembered
And as for the one that rested content, I
No chance misfortune can my will distort
Remind it of time, among those who remembered.
Nor any happiness make my soul drunk
فليسso does not يضعضعُنيshake me عارضٌa misfortune
وليسand does not يغطرسُنيmake me arrogant ماwhat يَسُـرّْbrings joy
So no misfortune shakes me,
Nor does what brings joy make me arrogant.
