Grief knotted a cord of affection in the heart,

and summoned the heart to the edge of sleeplessness's sword.

And evening's sorrows assailed you, as though they were

    death's messengers, coming and roaming.

So I checked the first rush of tears, and they held back,

and grew gentle through the blazing grief.

Time does not sustain one unchanging way of life,

and every allotted share is destined to run out.

Leave bygone days within their nests,

and consider your sorrows at every arrival.

And endure as those before you endured,

or wage your war without abatement.

So let the peoples know that I was not

one to waver before these calamities.

But I held myself above them,

not from fear of death or dread of combat,

rather, out of a dignity whose tent I will not profane,

and a firmness that overmasters rancor.

And many a day I spent in love with you,

clad in serenity and every kind of affection.

I crossed the horizon that day, not arrogant,

nor concealing the hollows and the uplands.

So I stood—or rather, she stood, resembling a star

that emerged from the two barriers, with a pillow.

I was smitten with her between hesitation and separation,

rather, between that and a black one setting out at dawn.

So if you ask, its sound will answer for me,

and if you fall silent, it will lie in wait.

And if you alight as I have alighted, how often

has love joined two hearts after separation.

And if you proclaim a talebearer's words, perhaps

parting is warranted by a hostile talebearer's words.

Rather, you have known for certain that a yearning

has overmastered the inward depths, endowed with stature,

polished or less so—all of it

is futile, and a lesson for the thirsty.

So I compelled my soul, while separation raged like a lion,

and my soul awaits reunion with sound judgment.

And the heart sways between the two,

drawing near, yet holding back for fear of arrival.

So it found a truth in broad daylight,

well-proportioned between the two twilights, reached in haste.

Through it, it rises above the horizons, out of its afflictions,

and gains all wealth, newly acquired and inherited.

And through it the heart freed itself from your grudges,

and from foes and rancor's lurking places.

And its sorrows fled and drew near,

with a full moon's eclipse or the rise of adversities.

So if she calls you repentantly, be content with her,

or lift your head with the gently drifting radiance.

Then uproot, or exact retribution from her storms,

or forgive and pardon, in manifest nobility.

On a night whose wont is to bestow gifts, wearied

by night travel with an ever-roaming wayfarer,

the heart then went on chanting it, as though

its storms had been laden without support.

And the soul is fearful, as though its eyes

had been gouged out, so its weeping lingered with thorns.

It shudders amid its dews, bewildered,

with prolonged sorrow or half-formed sleep.

So if you can defend it, then do so,

or leave off what you claim and proclaim.
