God is greatest, and the signs take shape.

And time runs its course according to what the pen reveals to it.

Justice is the soundest thing by which peoples live,

And the best thing in whose shade nations have grazed at ease.

Obedience to God is the key to prosperity, and whoever

Turns away from truth one day will be shattered.

And whatever worldly goods you have built upon disobedience,

Even if they rise for an hour, must collapse.

Do you not see how those people, after living in ease,

Have ended with their dominion dashed against disgrace?

    وهم أداروا كؤوسَ الذلِّ تُفْتدَمُ

    They erected an edifice of oppression beneath which they perished;

And they passed round cups of humiliation, fitted with cloth covers.

    واللهُ مِن فوقِهم ما فوقه حَكَمُ

    And they readied this evil's equipment;

And God is above them; no judge is above Him.

There was indeed a lesson in those who passed before them,

And time is the truest admonisher, if only they knew.

They did not consider the lessons of the days behind them,

And God guides aright whoever has firm resolve.

Do you not know that God is watchful,

Forgiving and pardoning—or, if He wills, taking vengeance?

I said it before—if only they had not been heedless.

They went blind and deaf; no high resolve is found in them.

The devils of error circled over them, so they did not

Disobey or oppose them where matters grew dire.

If only there were among them one clear-sighted, free of drowsiness!

But they would have nothing but arrogance, now humbled in the dust.

So they ignited wars that had no end,

And fed them people who had no sanctuary.

Do they not see God's chastisement? Already there have appeared

From Him its harbingers, and now they devour.

God laid down a law for us and made it clear

For whoever desires guidance; apart from it lies darkness.

Pharaoh was what he was only through those who

Had supported him; they were servants beneath him.

Had they left him short of his goal,

He would have turned back from it, wretched, though holding fast.

But they led him to the worst that

Souls have encountered, while the cord of error flowed smoothly.

They scheme, and the Lord of the Throne grants them respite,

While people are heedless, and calamity is overwhelming.

Do they hope for immortality—may they have no father—

While death reaps all whom their feet have carried?

Or have they denied what the Book has brought?

I mean resurrection; how great the calamity and remorse!

I have indeed seen the bonds of the days held firm,

While the people around them have no scruples.

This calamity has indeed laid bare a taint

That had lain within the folds of hearts whose heat was cold.

And today everyone has come to claim honor,

And the matter will soon take shape.

We rose up for peace that lay cast aside,

And war appears as a glimmer, then rages.

We rose up for prosperity lost long ago,

For life is troubled, and serenity is absent.

We rose up for the dignity of a soul whose honor was debased

By people who sanctioned misery that has come to devour.

And the soul endures a while, then is driven

Toward deliverance by a refusal to yield that does not falter.

    لكلِّ داءٍ دواءٌ ثُمَّ ينحسمُ

    And affairs, for all their ills, have their turns;

Every ailment has a remedy, and then is ended.

How many a pious man, free of clamor, have they ruined,

Who sought only subsistence, while appealing for judgment!

How much virtue have they squandered beneath oppression's roof,

And how often annihilated, how often oppressed, how often sinned!

And how many a prayer against them has been sent forth

By a pure, stainless heart that commits no sin!

They have squandered religion and worldly life, and gained nothing

But remorse that envelops them and crashes into them.
