To God I complain of sorrows whose night-visitor made off

With some of my serenity; then weariness and confusion choked.

I am a man of evident glories, poised and ready.

And false embellishment and deceit are not among my traits.

If calamity befell, I made God its guarantor,

Then it dispersed after arriving by night, trembling.

Leave this aside; God's command reaches its goal.

Before long, truth and falsehood become clear.

    And bind, for a hard-soiled, rain-soaked meadow,

Your poetry's saddles, while the rainstorms gather.

In a clearing whose stony ground the Bedouins have layered,

And pouring rain has wooed it; there it takes on patterns.

Or a hillock whose crest the nomads have furrowed,

So thirsty camels and herbage flourished in its villages.

The wind's ravaging blasts stalked it amid deep waters,

Fleeing from depths that the grinding noise had disturbed.

I stood within it, my eye roaming with ardour,

While the wide-eyed wild cattle, at rest, were terrified by hurried movement.

Then a mixed herd scattered from it, afflicted by choking anguish,

With anguish after it, and clamour beneath it.

    It had fled from a bare, soaring eagle;

A rat had unsettled her, or small creatures had frightened her.

Then she came on blazing, while she laboured,

And a sail fell from her, slit by the potbellied one.

Then death overtook her suddenly, while she was unaware,

And left her as crumbled remains, now being unearthed.
