    Remembrance called you after separation,

    though once you had patience.

And a phantom vision of her appeared,

before whose resolve the star turns aside.

    لَهُ لدَى قلبِكَ انتظارُ

    Long sleeplessness on her account called you;

your heart is waiting for it.

And long yearning, and an outpouring of sorrow,

whose impact sets the heart ablaze.

So you kept shedding tears from your eye,

    streaming down at her parting.

And had she given a truthful reply,

tears would have streamed from her eyelid.

Set this aside, for every sleepless spell,

    however long, will break.

Do not be distressed when worry comes by night,

for every worry has its ebb.

    And everything has its return,

and every night has its day.

And all that has a beginning for its origin

has an end by which it is governed.

    له علَى خَلقِه اقتِدارُ

    Thus has a Lord's decree gone forth;

He has power over His creation.

So say, 'We have heard,' and say, 'We have obeyed,'

to God, and victory will be decreed for you.

Do not think well of people

who have not acted well; that is a disgrace.

And say, 'Peace'; we have a day of return,

when their final lot will be loss.

    فما لَهم دُونَه اعتِبارُ

    They have been given their waywardness in place of guidance;

so without it they take no heed.

An age-old law has taken its course upon them,

so outside it they have no resting place.

So repentance will not avail them,

nor will an excuse avail them.
