ظهرَappeared الفسادُcorruption فماso not لهمfor them مِنany رادعٍdeterrent
إلاexcept الوباءُthe pestilence بأمرِat the command of ربِّكَyour Lord يحصدُreaps
Corruption has appeared, and nothing restrains them
Corruption appeared, yet they had no deterrent
Except the pestilence, which reaps at your Lord's command.
Except the plague by your Lord's command reaping
ياO ويْلَهُمwoe to them إنْif لمnot يُجِيبواthey answer ربَّهمtheir Lord
ولكلِّand for every باغٍtransgressor فيin البريَّةِcreation مشهدُa spectacle
Woe to them if they do not answer their Lord.
Oh woe to them, if they don't answer their Lord
And for every transgressor in creation there is a spectacle.
And for every rebel in the wilderness, a scene
ضَلُّواthey strayed from السَّبيلَthe path وسبَّحواand they glorified باسمِin the name of الهوَىdesire
والأمرُand affairs بعدَafter تجمُّعٍcoming together يتبدَّدُfalls apart
They strayed from the path and glorified the name of desire.
They strayed from the path and praised in the name of passion
And affairs, after coming together, fall apart.
And the matter after gathering scatters
ظنُّواthey thought بأنَّthat اللهَGod ربَّكَyour Lord غافلٌheedless
فرماهُمُso it struck them الطَّاعونُthe plague فهْوfor it is مجنَّدُenlisted
They thought that God, your Lord, was heedless.
They thought that Allah your Lord was unaware
So the plague struck them, for it is enlisted.
So the plague struck them as it was regimented
تلكthose المساجدُmosques غُلِّقتْwere shut tight مِنfrom دونِهمbefore them
لمdid not يَبكِweep for فُرقتَهمtheir parting وربِّكَby your Lord، مسجِدُa mosque
Those mosques were closed to them.
Those mosques were closed without them
Not a mosque, by your Lord, wept at their parting.
It didn't weep their separation, and your Lord, the mosque
غضِبَgrew angry الإلهُGod عليهمُwith them فرماهُمُso He struck them
والأمرُand the situation حقًّاtruly بعدafter ذلكthat أنكَدُmore wretched
God grew angry with them, so He struck them.
The God was angry with them so he struck them
And after that, the situation is truly more wretched.
And the matter truly after that was most distressing
باؤواthey came away بخِزيٍwith disgrace ماnot لهfor it مِنany كاشفٍdispeller
إلاexcept الصِّـراطُthe path المستقيمُstraight الأمجدُmost glorious
They incurred disgrace that nothing can dispel
They came in disgrace that has no discoverer
Except the most glorious straight path.
Except the straight path, the most glorious
تركواthey abandoned الصِّـراطَthe path وماand not لهمfor them مِنfrom دونِهِbesides it
هادٍa guide إلىto الرَّحمنِthe Most Merciful بعدُthereafter فيهتدواso they might be guided
They abandoned the path, and apart from it they have no
They left the path and they have no guide without it
Guide to the Most Merciful thereafter, so that they might be guided.
To the Merciful, afterwards they will be guided
الظُّلمُoppression سُنَّتُهمtheir custom وساءتْand evil is سُنَّةًa custom
والمكرُand deceit مرقَدُهمtheir resting place وساءَand evil is المرقَدُthe resting place
Oppression is their custom, and evil is that custom.
Oppression is their tradition and the tradition was evil
And deceit is their resting place, and evil is that resting place.
And plotting is their bedding and the bedding was miserable
أمْor كيفhow تُكشَفُbe lifted غُمَّةٌdistress عنfrom أمَّةٍa nation
يحدوdrives onward بِسادتِهاits leaders لئامٌvile men نُكَّدُill-natured
Or how can distress be lifted from a nation
Or how can a cloud be uncovered from a nation
Whose leaders are driven by vile, ill-natured men?
In which its leaders are wicked and distressed
عُودواreturn إلىto الرَّحمنِthe Most Merciful أوor فتصبَّرواthen endure patiently
إنْif يُجدِكُمْavails you صبرٌpatience لهfor it وتجلَّدواand steel yourselves
Return to the Most Merciful, or else endure patiently,
Return to the Merciful or be patient
If patience can help you bear it—and steel yourselves.
If you have patience for Him and show resilience
ماnot أنتُمُyou إلاbut جراثيمٌgerms هوَتْfell
فتلقَّفَتْهاthen it swallowed them up مِثلُهاtheir like، فتزَوَّدواso take provisions
You are nothing but germs that fell,
You are nothing but germs that drifted
Then their like swallowed them up; so take provisions.
And alike took them, so be prepared
لعَناتُcurses ربِّكَyour Lord حلَّقتْcircled overhead مِنfrom حولِهمaround them
كيفhow النَّجاةُescape ومقْتُهwhile His loathing يترصَّدُlies in wait
Your Lord's curses circled all around them.
The curses of your Lord hovered around them
How can there be escape while His loathing lies in wait?
How can there be salvation while His abhorrence lies in ambush
فالعَنْso curse إلهيmy God كلَّevery باغٍtransgressor مُفسدٍone who spreads corruption
ماnot إنْat all لهfor him إلاexcept عِداؤكَenmity toward You محتِدُa root
So curse, my God, every transgressor who spreads corruption,
So, my God curse every corrupting rebel
Whose only root is enmity toward You.
Who has none but your enmity as adversary
لاdo not تَهدِguide بعدafter اليومِtoday منهمamong them فاسقًاa sinner
واحصدهُمُand reap them حصدًاa reaping وبئسَand wretched is المحصدُthe harvest
Do not guide any sinner among them after today.
Do not guide any wicked of them after today
And reap them utterly—and wretched is the harvest.
And reap them, evil is the harvest
Sol 6.1
