    قد كان في هذا مثارٌ للعَجَبْ

    I was told of people who blame without cause;

    In this there was indeed cause for wonder.

    لكنها ثقةٌ تبدَّتْ عن كَثَبْ

    They claimed you were conceited, though you are not so;

    Yet it is confidence, revealed at close quarters.

    I am a man; confidently I have inscribed my glory,

    I spur the newly won with an age-old legacy, pristine and fresh.

    I have been brought to the utmost of my wishes, and in me there is no

    Folly of conceit, nor does ruin come near me.

    Can one brought to his goal be conceited,

    When he has spent the night praising his Lord for what He bestowed?

    Conceit is indeed a folly I have been spared,

    For neither its head nor its tail comes near me.

    Humility does not mean that we diminish the worth of one

    Whose station God has raised above the ranks.

    Humility is indeed for him to live with his rightful due,

    Without detracting from the eminence he has been granted.

    If that is conceit, then welcome—

    Welcome to it wherever it alights; it is indeed called for.
