تواضعتُI humbled myself للرَّحمنِbefore the Most Merciful فيماin whatever ينوبُنيbefalls me
وأيقنتُand I became certain أنَّthat اللهَGod ليسis not بغافلِheedless
I humbled myself before the All-Merciful in whatever befalls me,
I humbled myself before the Most Merciful in whatever befalls me.
certain that God is never heedless.
And I became certain that God is not heedless.
وأيقنتُand I became certain أنَّthat اللهَGod إنif شاءwills شيئةًa thing willed
مضتْit came to pass وتأتَّتْand was brought about مِنfrom قريبٍnear ونائلِand bestowing
And I am certain that, if God wills a thing,
And I became certain that if God wills a thing,
it goes forth and comes to pass—from the Near, the Bestower.
it comes to pass and is brought about by One near and generous.
فلستُso I am not بجازعٍdistraught حياتيthroughout my life وباسمِهِand to His name
تمسَّكتُI clung دهريthroughout my lifetime غيرَnot أعسرَhard-pressed واجلِfearful
So I do not spend my life in anguish; in His name
So I am not distraught throughout my life, and to His name
I have held fast all my days, neither hard-pressed nor afraid.
I have clung all my days, neither hard-pressed nor afraid.
وكمand how many كربةٍan affliction طافتswept over عليَّme لقيتُهاI met it
بصدرٍwith a breast رحِيبٍspacious غيرnot أشأمَill-fated ناكلِshrinking back
How many ordeals have swept over me, and I have faced them
And many an affliction that swept over me I met
with a spacious heart, without foreboding or flinching.
with a spacious breast, neither ill-fated nor shrinking back.
سألتُI asked بربِّby the Lord البيتِof the House هلwhether ليَfor me دُونَهbesides Him
وليٌّa protector علىthrough الأيَّامِthe days عندat times of التَّخاذلِmutual abandonment
I asked, by the Lord of the House: Have I, apart from Him,
I asked, by the Lord of the House: have I, besides Him,
any protector against time’s vicissitudes, when all support fails?
a protector through the days, when support fails?
وهلand is there ليfor me سواهbesides Him ملجأٌa refuge حينwhen ألتجيI seek shelter
وهلand do دُونَapart from ربِّيmy Lord أرتجيI hope للنَّوازلِagainst calamities
And have I any refuge but Him when I seek shelter?
And have I any refuge but Him when I seek shelter?
Apart from Him—my Lord—whom can I look to when calamities descend?
And whom but my Lord do I look to when calamities strike?
رفعتُI raised أكُفَّthe palms السُّؤْلِof supplication للهِto God فارعوتْso they drew back
بِفَيضِwith an overflow مناهاof their wishes غيرَnot غثَّاءَfroth ثاكلِof one bereaved
I raised the hands of supplication to Him, and they drew back
I raised the palms of supplication to God, so they drew back,
brimming with what they wished for—not the empty froth of one bereaved.
with an overflow of their wishes, not a bereaved one's froth.
ومَنand whoever يرعَobserves حقَّthe due اللهِof God فيin كلِّevery أمرِهِaffair of his

Whoever observes God’s due in every affair
And whoever honors God's due in every affair of his
will find Him a refuge from devastating calamities.
will find Him a refuge from devastating calamities.
