Sorrows called to you, spending the night close to you,

and griefs overwhelmed you, lingering, gazing intently.

And you had not forgotten what you knew in youth—

    the many forms of passion, long since gone;

nights when we gave our union free rein,

though the one who had beckoned had drawn the sword of parting.

I say, with the meeting place far away, as we are buffeted

by the calamities of time: have compassion for what ails me.

Do you not see me, whenever her apparition comes,

conversing with it as though the apparition were a person appearing to me?

I rebuked a tear that had welled up in my eye,

and implored that patience—if only it were near.

I recalled people who went to great lengths in tale-bearing,

so you would draw away; since then, parting has been my illness.

So be gentle with this heart: its flame

has stretched forth, and now it thirsts for tenderness.

Upon you be God's peace, as long as night keeps awake

eyelids that sleep rejects, turning away.

Indeed, this night has grown so long that it is as though

some hindrance had turned it away from daybreak.

So I draped myself in patience's robe, until there appeared to us

the burning pangs of longing, lingering, bidding me desist.

So when I saw that the matter had grown truly grave,

and no path to reunion lay behind me,

I lifted my heart from the stumble of its yearning,

and gathered up patience's robe; then it hastened away.

And I said, 'Perhaps we shall meet later'; I am only

giving myself hope, having seen the distance between us.
