سَرَى الشَّوقُ والسُّهادُ

سَرَى الشَّوقُ والسُّهادُ

ووجدٌ هو المُفادُ

ووجدٌ هو المُفادُ

Longing and sleeplessness traveled by night,

And love’s anguish is the outcome.

فصاخَتْ له عَوادٍ

فصاخَتْ له عَوادٍ

هي الحَرفُ والمِدادُ

هي الحَرفُ والمِدادُ

Then afflictions hearkened to it—

They are the letter and the ink.

بلَيلٍ تجُولُ فيه

بلَيلٍ تجُولُ فيه

نجومٌ لها امتدادُ

نجومٌ لها امتدادُ

In a night through which roam

Stars extending far.

إذا أقبلتْ تعدَّتْ

إذا أقبلتْ تعدَّتْ

ببأسٍ هو العتادُ

ببأسٍ هو العتادُ

When they approach, they overstep,

With a might that is their armament.

وإنْ أدبرتْ تولَّى

وإنْ أدبرتْ تولَّى

بها الصَّفوُ والرُّقادُ

بها الصَّفوُ والرُّقادُ

And if they turn away, there departs

With them, serenity and sleep.

ولِي منكِ قبلُ وعدٌ

ولِي منكِ قبلُ وعدٌ

به الصبرُ يُستزادُ

به الصبرُ يُستزادُ

And I have an earlier promise from you,

Through it, more patience is sought.

فإنْ أسْلُ ما دهاني

فإنْ أسْلُ ما دهاني

فأنَّى ليَ ابتعادُ

فأنَّى ليَ ابتعادُ

So if I forget what befell me,

How, then, can I draw away?

وإنْ أصْبُ نحوَ وصلٍ

وإنْ أصْبُ نحوَ وصلٍ

فصَرمي هو المرادُ

فصَرمي هو المرادُ

And if I yearn toward union,

Then cutting me off is the intent.

فإنْ كان مِن وشاةٍ

فإنْ كان مِن وشاةٍ

فما إنْ ليَ اعتمادُ

فما إنْ ليَ اعتمادُ

So if this comes from slanderers,

Then I have no trust at all.

ولكنْ هو التَّأسِّي

ولكنْ هو التَّأسِّي

بقلبٍ له اعتقادُ

بقلبٍ له اعتقادُ

But it is finding solace

In a heart that holds conviction.

فدَعْ عنكَ مَن تولَّى

فدَعْ عنكَ مَن تولَّى

بحقدٍ له اتِّقادُ

بحقدٍ له اتِّقادُ

So leave aside whoever has turned away

With hatred that burns.

فإنَّ المعادَ آتٍ

فإنَّ المعادَ آتٍ

وكلٌّ له معادُ

وكلٌّ له معادُ

For the return is coming,

And everyone has a return.

ودَعْ هذه المآسي

ودَعْ هذه المآسي

لها ساعةً نَفادُ

لها ساعةً نَفادُ

And leave these tragedies aside;

They will have an end in time.

فكم قبْلَها تقضَّتْ

فكم قبْلَها تقضَّتْ

فما إنْ لها اطِّرادُ

فما إنْ لها اطِّرادُ

For how many before them have passed!

So they have no unbroken continuance.

هو الدَّهرُ في رحاهُ

هو الدَّهرُ في رحاهُ

ضروبٌ لها اعتمادُ

ضروبٌ لها اعتمادُ

Such is time; within its mill

Are varied forms, each with its own support.
