Eloquence cried out, alarming the fearful heart,
Eloquence cried out, startling the anxious heart,
complaining to the All-Merciful of the intruder’s guile.
Complaining to the Most Merciful of the intruder's guile.

You disfigured poetry’s face with a princely office
You have marred the face of verse under a leadership
that rose to flatter every base, obscure nobody.
That set about flattering every obscure scoundrel.

And you bestowed titles upon every hypocrite—
And you bestowed titles on every hypocrite,
a worthless wretch, low in station, foolish and ignorant.
Worthless, low in standing, foolish and ignorant.

You hurled a rock at the language of immortality,
And you hurled a rock at the language of immortality;
and it rebounded upon you with a bereaved mourner’s scream.
It returned to you with a bereaved one's wail.

You imagined that poetry was merchandise
And you thought that verse was a commodity,
to be bought with vile, ruinous money.
Bought with base, ruinous money.

Poetry is indeed a trust, borne
Indeed, verse is a trust, upheld
by the hands of eloquence, in the discerning poet’s keeping.
By eloquence's hands in the skilled speaker's keeping.

The prince is not the one whom a clique has chosen—
The prince is not the one chosen by a clique
a clique that spends its nights demolishing every lofty edifice.
That has taken to demolishing every lofty edifice.
إنَّindeed الأميرَthe prince لَمَنْtruly the one who يَقومُupholds بحقِّهits due

The true prince is he who gives poetry its due
Indeed, the prince is whoever does it justice
and defends it against every reckless deviant.
And shields it from every reckless, wayward man.

Do not claim to compose poetry when
Do not claim to compose verse while
you have filled your lips with deadly solecism.
Your lips are filled with fatal errors of speech.

Poetry is an edifice whose gate none may approach
Poetry is an edifice; none approaches its door
except a discerning master, neither insipid nor deceitful.
Except one discerning—not a worthless schemer.

It is eloquence’s emblem and badge of honor,
It is eloquence's emblem and badge of honor,
distinguishing the inferior from the excellent.
Between one of lesser merit and another of greater.

Love of prominence blinded you, so you plunged
The love of prominence blinded you, so you plunged
ignorantly into a momentous, daunting matter.
In ignorance into a great, formidable undertaking.

Mere wishing will not bring a desire within reach
Wishing brings no need closer to fulfillment,
unless seconded by prompt endeavor.
Unless it is coupled with prompt action.

Ask those who went before, if you wish
And ask those who went before, if you wish to
to receive an answer that cures the questioner.
Receive an answer in which the questioner's healing lies.

You cast poetry into its shrouds,
You cast poetry into its shrouds,
thus wronging a symbol—and how many deceivers there are!
So you gave it a wretched burial—and how many deceivers there are!

This poetry complains of you to its Lord;
This verse complains of you to its Lord;
so await the decisive Day of Reckoning.
So await the decisive Day of Reckoning.

O fools, do not intrude!
O fools, do not intrude;
Far be it that you should attain the station of the wise.
You are far from reaching the station of the wise.

Between the masters of verse and you
Between the masters of verse and you
lies a vast gulf no heedless fool can measure.
Lies an immense gulf, immeasurable to the heedless.

So take your path toward some other pursuit,
So take your path toward a different pursuit,
and leave the field to every worthy, accomplished master.
And leave the field to every capable, accomplished person.

Abandon lies whose true nature stands exposed:
And abandon lies whose nature has been exposed;
not one among humankind will pass them on.
No one among humankind passes them on.

And feign a little modesty; perhaps it
will cure you of the intractability of a deadly disease.
Will cure you of an intractable, deadly disease.
