Indeed, she who robbed you of sleep is laughing

At your long yearning, while sleeplessness is stricken.

A phantom of her passed through my night; there appeared

To it my heart's longing, while my heart was shaken.

Until she bore my heart away, paying no heed,

As Tammuz bore the heat of the sun.

I speak while night spreads its robe in shame,

And a rogue has absconded with hopes.

And the eye stays wakeful, shedding its tears,

And sorrows hiss in the depths of night.

I swore by God, neither falsely nor lying,

That my heart is reproached for this longing.

So if a madman blames you for sleeplessness,

Then your yearning suffers no blow from the reproachers.

Let them blame, even if their mourning women wail,

As a battered man exposed himself to the sea.
