ياO صاحبيmy friend هاجتِwere stirred الشُّجونُthe sorrows لِمَاbecause of what
قلتَyou said فلمso did not أتَّخِذْI adopt لهاfor them سَنَناa course
O my friend, sorrows stirred at what
My friend, sorrows have raged
you said, and I chose no course for them.
Since you spoke, though I made no provisions for them
لناfor us بهذاin this هبوبُa rising ساريةٍa night-rain cloud
مِنfrom فيضِan overflow of سهدٍsleeplessness يطاردُchases away الوَسَناdrowsiness
For us, in this, a night-rain cloud rises,
In this, we have a blowing wind
from an overflow of sleeplessness that chases drowsiness away.
Of abundant downpour chasing the midges
يحدوurges on دموعًاtears كأنَّas though حُرقتَهاtheir burning
نارٌa fire غَذَاهاfed it الهشيمُthe dry brushwood فافتُتِناthen was enthralled
It urges tears on, as though their burning
It sings tears as if
were a fire that dry brushwood fed, then was enthralled by.
A fire fed by twigs had kindled us
أبدعتَyou excelled فيماin what نَظَمتَyou composed قافيةًa rhyme
إنْif قِيلَis spoken قولٌa word فَصَدِّقَنْthen do believe حَسَناHasan
You excelled in the rhymed verse you composed;
You created excellent rhyme
if a word is spoken, then do believe Hasan.
In what you composed, so believe us if it’s said it’s good verse
أتاكَcame to you ربُّthe master of القريضِverse مؤتلقًاradiant
يحدوurging on بديعًاwondrous verse سحابُهhis cloud هَتَناpoured rain
The master of verse came to you radiant,
The Lord of poetry came to you spontaneously
urging wondrous verse onward; his cloud poured rain.
Composing beautifully, his clouds belonging to us
ياO صاحبيmy friend إنماonly القريضُverse بناthrough us
عاشَhas lived، فدُمتُمso may you all endure لهfor it ودمتُand may I endure أناI
O my friend, it is only through us that verse
My friend, poetry lives through us
has lived; may you live on for it, and may I too.
So may you live long for it, and may I live long
نطْلقُwe release صيْحاتِناour cries مُجلجلةًthundering
هناكthere تبدوyou appear وقدand already بدوتُI have appeared هُناhere
We let loose our thunderous cries;
Our shouts ring out
there you appear, while I have appeared here.
There they appear, and here I have appeared
ياO لوعةَanguish of الوجدِlonging قدalready تَقاسَمَهاshared it
قلبيmy heart وعينيand my eye، لقدindeed سئمتُI have wearied of عَناsuffering
O anguish of longing, already shared by
Oh the anguish of passion we’ve shared
my heart and my eye—I have grown weary of suffering.
My heart and eyes, I’ve grown weary of blaming
قلtell ليme بربِّيby my Lord أليسis it not ينفعُنيit benefits me
وجدٌlonging أضاءتshone لهfor it الدُّجورُthe darkness سَناradiance
Tell me, by my Lord, does it not benefit me—
Say, by my Lord, does it not benefit me
a longing for which darkness shone with radiance?
That passion whose darkness lit up our past
دعوتُI called فيin البينِseparation كلَّevery نائحةٍmourning woman
فألقتِso she lent السَّمعَan ear تستزيدُseeking more ثَناpraise
In separation I called every mourning woman,
I called in separation on every wailing woman
and she lent an ear, seeking more praise.
Who lent an ear, demanding more elegy from us
نؤمِّلُwe hope for الوصلَreunion لوif only يرقُّwould soften لناtoward us
عواذلٌreproachers قدalready تعهَّدواthey nurtured الإحَناthe grudges
We hope for reunion—if only they would soften toward us,
We hope for reunion if
those reproachers who have nurtured grudges.
Charmers who have pledged themselves to love grant it to us
ذكَّرتَنيyou reminded me والفؤادُand the heart مُدَّكِرٌremembering
وكيفand how يسلوforgets الشُّجونَthe sorrows مَنone who غُبِناwas wronged
You reminded me, and the heart remembers;
You reminded me while my heart reminds
and how can one who was wronged forget his sorrows?
How can one cured of passion forget us?
ياO صاحبيmy friend قدْalready لهاhas toyed الفراقُseparation بناwith us
فماso what عساناmight we نقولُsay منذُsince دَناit drew near
O my friend, separation has toyed with us;
My friend, separation has come between us
so what can we say since it drew near?
So what can we say now that it has drawn near?
إذاwhen ذكرتَyou recall النَّوىseparation ادَّكِرْremember حَسَنًاHasan
وسلْand ask لهfor him الوصلَreunion يَرفعُit lifts الحَزَناsorrow
When you recall separation, remember Hasan,
When you mention the beloved, remember goodness
and seek reunion for him—it lifts sorrow.
And ask him for reunion to dispel the sadness
دعوتُI invited قومًاa people إلىto مسالمتيpeace with me
قدalready جرَّدواthey bared الضِّغنَthe rancor واقتَفَواand they pursued عَنَناopposition
I invited some people to make peace with me,
I called a people to reconcile with me
who had bared their rancor and pursued confrontation.
Who had armed themselves with malice and followed enmity
فقلso say أفيقواcome to your senses فليسfor it is not مِنamong شِيَميmy traits
صبرٌpatience علىunder الظُّلمِinjustice لوif ألمَّbefell بِناupon us
So say, “Come to your senses! It is not my way
So say: come to your senses, for it is not my way
to bear injustice patiently, should it befall us.”
To be patient with injustice if it touches us
