Enough—I seek no friend who gives me in return

The false affection of a dull-sensed chatterer.

I almost imagine myself, when I accompany him,

A pecking bird lamenting exile from home.

Enough—for I have spurned my breezes and my lights,

And returned to a wilderness seething with despair.

Enough for me at dawn is a radiance that lulls me,

And at evening, the face of the night-roaming star.

I grow still with the night in the world of its ease,

So the night fills my predawn hours with melodies.

And night is a world brimming with dreams

For one who lives upon a fire of suffering.

And I have not consented to let my soul yield, nor

Have I been faithless to my hopes and my thoughts.
