You departed and left grit in my eye sockets.

And kindled the fires of sorrow in my innermost thoughts.

I lost you as eyes lose their light.

And would that you could be ransomed with the eyes' light.

I kept you as my fortress, protecting me from death,

And, by my life, you are among the most precious treasures.

And a supple spear that drives the foe back with his banner overturned,

And a keen sword by which the edges of sharp swords are bent.

    وان نفذت أذري عقيق المحاجر

    So these tears of mine are pearls I have scattered;

And if they run out, I will scatter the carnelian of my eye sockets.

My watchword is Mutammim's elegies for Malik,

And disturbing my neighbor with weeping is one of my rites.

For the loss of Abu Yahya, like the cuts of daggers.

I would spare you, light of my eye, from slumber in the dust,

Dust-covered, even though you have become the graves' bedfellow.

I have raised pulpits of mourning in lament for you,

For you are worthier of ascending pulpits.

You broke my backbone with the direst calamity,

Before which, by my life, even the patient one's patience wanes.

When you were near, I had joy and cheerfulness,

And your distance from me is like a bone lodged in my throat.

Indeed, before today I had not known weeping,

    For a kinsman's absence or a neighbor's departure.

For the loss of a mate, I would be the quickest to offer aid.

Indeed, my circle was united like the Pleiades,

And, like Suhayl, it became distant from its neighbor.

And treacherous Time aimed his arrows at me,

And nocked them toward me, so they stitched through my eye sockets.

Did he have grudges against me, one following another,

That he repaid me for them with a mighty one's onslaught?

My brother, Time's whole span was a moment to me,

With you near, and deep darkness was bright and radiant.

And now, to me, a glance's outward reach and return

Are like the span of nights and bygone centuries.

And to me, the light of full moons and the sun at midmorning

Is like the hue of rainy nights in Jumada.

I lost you, as precious as a costly necklace,

And you are dearer than the most precious jewels.
