With what, I wonder, shall I welcome Eid, O my Lord?

While the night of sorrow and grief carries the caravan ever onward.

I see Eid around me unlike what I once knew it to be,

And unlike what it once was: boundless hope.

I see it downcast, pale, its visions pitch-black,

Dragging its steps in bewilderment and terror.

Shall I greet it with hopes that weep in sorrow?

Shall I greet it with displacement, hunger, and anguish?

Shall I greet it as it crouches in the terrifying cave,

Recounting to the fates the tale of the wolf,

Recounting to history the story of a nation

That fell from the heights, brokenhearted?

I see it, and sorrowful tears flow forth

For the memory of my sweet hopes, and for love.

Shall I greet it when my loved ones have scattered from me,

And vanished, bewildered, yearning for the road?

Where, then, are our nights that flooded the worlds

With a flood of hopes and the sweet wellspring?

And where are our sweet songs that rippled,

Echoed around me by close friends among my companions?

I looked around, and the terrifying cave loomed,

Tormenting me, O my Lord, though I had done no wrong.

And around me were little orphans; whenever they walked

In their rags, they shook my heart with their suffering.

Shall I greet it while my son—look, over there!—and my daughter

Both cry out for vengeance blazing in the dust?

And my wife, to whom I entrusted all my tenderness,

Almost peers out today from the realm of the unseen,

Calling for thunderous vengeance, for the heights—

Toward them, toward liberation, toward glory, toward the leap,

Toward another round, thundering and defiant,

And calling out to free men, horses, and swords.

Shall I greet it while free men in every town

Are bewildered by displacement, scheming, and plunder?

They set the world ablaze with fire and pride,

And rose against the executioner, the fetter, and crucifixion.

And they held sway at the pinnacle of glory,

And theirs was a noble throne upon the shooting stars.

Alas for me! What has changed their lot today,

So they became the stuff of shameless talk and lies?

With what, I wonder, shall I greet it, O Lord? Tell me.

For events have left me in a difficult predicament.
