وتنالُand she harms مِنْكَyou بِحَدّwith the edge of مُقْلَتِهاher eye
ماwhat لاnot يَنالُinflicts بِحَدِّهِwith its edge النَّصْلُthe blade
And with the edge of her eye she does you harm
She wounds you with her glances as no swords can wound;
That no blade can do with its edge.
Her beauty occupies all who have eyes to see;
شَغَلَتْكَshe has engrossed you وهْيَand she is لِكُلِّfor every ذيpossessor of بَصَرٍsight
لاقىhas encountered مَحاسِنَthe charms of وَجْهِهاher face شُغْلُa preoccupation
She has engrossed you, and for everyone with sight
Her heart is wise, keeping her from those in love;
Who has beheld her face’s charms, she is a preoccupation.
Yet her eyes are ignorant, full of coquetry.
فَلِقَلْبِهاfor her heart has حِلْمٌself-restraint يُباعِدُهاkeeps her distant
عنfrom ذيone possessed of الهَوىpassionate love وَلِطَرْفِهاand her gaze has جَهْلُrecklessness
For her heart has self-restraint that keeps her away
When you look on her beauty every glance means death;
From the lover, while her gaze is reckless.
Her face is a moon, her eyes are kohl;
وإذاand when نَظَرْتَyou look إلىat مَحاسِنهاher charms
فَلِكُلِّthen for every مَوْضِعِplace of نَظْرَةٍa glance قَتْلُdeath
And when you look upon her charms,
For in her face is a moon, and in her eyes is kohl.
Then wherever your glance falls, there is death.
ولِوَجْههاand her face has مِنْfrom وَجْهِهاher face قَمَرٌa moon
ولِعَيْنِهاand her eye has مِنْfrom عَيْنِهاher eye كُحْلُkohl
And her face’s moon comes from her face itself,
And her eye’s kohl comes from her eye itself.
