ياO أَيُّهاyou المُزمِعُone resolved to depart ثُمَّthen اِنثَنىturned back
لاlet not يَثنِكَdeter you الحازيthe augur وَلاnor الشاحِجُthe croaking raven
O you who resolved to depart, then turned back,
Let neither the augur nor the croaking raven deter you,
ولاnor قَعيدٌa beast coming from behind أَغَضَبٌbroken (reading uncertain) قَرنُهُits horn
هاجَroused لَهُfor it مِنfrom مَرتَعٍa pasture هائِجُa disturber
Nor a broken-horned beast coming from behind,
Roused from its pasture by some disturber.
قُلتُI said لِعَمروٍto ʿAmr حينَwhen أَرسَلتُهُI sent him
وَقَدand already حَباcrept up مِنfrom دُونِهِbefore him عالِجُʿĀlij, a sandy tract
I said to ʿAmr when I sent him forth,
And ʿĀlij's sands had already crept up before him:
لاdo not تَكسَعِleave unmilked الشَولَthe scant-milked she-camels بِأَغبارِهاwith their remaining milk
إِنَّكَindeed you لاnot تَدريknow مَنِwho الناتِجُthe calf-deliverer
Do not leave the scant-milked camels' last milk in their udders;
You do not know who will deliver their calves.
قَدindeed كُنتَyou were يَوماًone day تَرتَجيhoping for رِسلَهاtheir milk
فَأَطرِدَso send to and fro الحائِلُthe milk-pourer وَالدالِجُand the milk-carrier
Once you used to hope for their milk;
So send the milk-pourer and milk-carrier to and fro.
رُبَّmany a عِشارٍten-month-pregnant she-camels سَوفَwill يَغتالُهاseize them unawares
لاneither مُبطِئُone slowing السَيرَthe pace وَلاnor عائِجُone turning aside
Many ten-month-pregnant camels will be seized unawares
By one who neither slows his pace nor turns aside.
يُطيرُهاhe sends them flying شَلّاًdriving hard إِلىto أَهلِهِhis people
كَماjust as يُطيرُsends flying البَكَرَةَthe young she-camel الفالِجُthe winning gambler
He drives them headlong to his people,
As a winning gambler sends a young she-camel flying.
بَيناwhile الفَتىthe young man يَسعىstrives وَيُسعىand efforts are made لَهُfor him
تيحَwas destined لَهُfor him مِنfrom أَمرِهِhis affairs خالِجُa snatching calamity
While a young man strives and others strive for him,
A calamity is destined to wrench him from his affairs.
يَترُكُhe leaves ماwhat رَقَّحَcarefully husbanded مِنof عَيشِهِhis livelihood
يَعيثُruns riot فيهِthrough it هَمَجٌa rabble هامِجُworthless
He leaves what he carefully husbanded for his livelihood;
A worthless rabble runs riot through it.
فاصبُبso pour out لأَضيافِكَfor your guests أَلبانَهاtheir milk
فَإِنَّfor indeed شَرَّthe worst اللَبَنِmilk الوالِجُthat retained within the udder
So pour out their milk for your guests,
For the worst milk is what stays within the udder.
وَاعلَمand know بِأَنَّthat النَفسَthe soul إِنif عُمِّرَتis granted long life
يَوماًone day لَهاfor it مِنfrom سَنَةٍa famine-year لاعِجُa searing affliction
And know that, if a soul is granted long life,
One day a famine-year will bring it searing pain.
كَذاكَthus لِلإِنسانِfor a human being فيin عَيشِهِhis life
غالِيَةٌa fatal calamity (reading uncertain) قامَrose لَهاover it ناشِجُa sobbing mourner
Thus, for man in the course of his life,
There is a fatal calamity over which a mourner rises sobbing.
