O clan of Zayd Manat, is there any restrainer

among you to keep Hammam from folly?

No common folk treat us insolently

but we shall split their skulls among the skulls.

Salamah was one of us when he came to us seeking vengeance,

running with a white, keen-edged sword like a pool.

Then he struck the nape-hair with it, claiming

a swaggerer’s deed, crippled in his grasp.

And he wheeled toward him beneath the dust, dragging him

    as a camel-handler drags, intent on making a she-camel foster a calf.

And he went forth, directing her toward the desert in summer,

crossing the vast wastes along a scorching path.
