    وأخوك نافعك الذي لا يكذب

    O Damr, tell me—though you will not tell me;

    And your brother is the one who helps you, who does not lie.

    Is the ruling that, when you prosper

    and are secure, I am the distant outsider?

    And when, one day, hardships upon hardships

    grieve you, then I am the loving friend, the closest kin.

    How strange that ruling! And my remaining

    among you under that ruling is stranger still.

    And why do you have the choicest land and its pasture,

    while I have scant waterholes and their barren grazing?

    وإذا يحاس الحيس يدعى جندب

    And when a calamity comes, I am summoned to it;

    and when the date confection is mixed, Jundub is summoned.

    This, by your lives, is humiliation itself.

    May I have neither mother nor father if that is so.
