Your eyes taught me love and literature,

And poetry, prose, history, and books.

Without them, we would not have known the paths of fidelity,

Nor known, through the days, what was required.

Nor poured forth what our hearts conceal

Of treasures, whether silver or gold.

    أفادنا فشكرنا ذلك السببا

    Love's spring was indeed the means of quenching our thirst;

It benefited us, so we thanked that cause.

For from love come my beginnings and my setting forth

Into life; through it my heart sang and yearned.

At its hands we wove a thousand rhymes,

Time and its people sang them in rapture.

Through them thought's barren ground grew green, and clad

In them was reason; men of letters drank their fill from their overflow.

Nothing brought this poetry forth from our breasts

But love; without its command, it would have refused.

    Its 'eyes' brim from the springs of love;

And if it complains of thirst, it drinks from their spring.

    The coquetry within love has indeed endeared it to me;

It quenches longing's blaze in my heart whenever it flares.

    إخالها في دياجير الدجى شهبا

    And the wisdom within poetry has endeared it to me;

I fancy them shooting stars in the deep darkness of night.

And the history of those gone before has endeared prose to me:

A reading that brings forebears and the ages back to life.

In it, I study a thousand events with Time,

Concerning the centuries, and recount from it what was written,

And what Ibn Jarir narrated in his collections of reports,

Of events, from those who wrote or were companions,

And Ibn al-Athir, and what his epics contain,

And the wonders he recounted from the tales of humankind.

Why do histories never cease to accompany me,

Wherever I go, not departing like those who have gone?

I live them, second after second,

And the narrators have shown me earnestness and play.

If only the nights whose freshness I wore away

In search of truth, pursuing it even when veiled,

Would confer with people through effort and knowledge,

And reclaim from history what was stolen!

For narratives contain biases and temperaments,

And one who wrongs truth does not sense falsehood.

    We must—must—scrutinize what they transmitted,

And what they narrated of it, whether poetry or literature.

If those who wrote our history had been truthful,

And had been fair, we would not have faced hardship after them.

They told us: 'Your history holds lessons,'

But they merely garbled them, so 'lessons' became 'Arabs.'

Yet among them, despite their faults, are a few

Who sought the truth in what was said or written.

These, then, hold a place within the soul,

A lofty one; the words of others in learning are dust.
