    When the lips of rhymes smile,

    a heart flutters for them, and a mouth sings them.

    حديثاً به ريح الصبا تترنم

    And the nights recount its tale,

    a tale the east wind sings;

    its echo: Ah, how beautiful are poetry and passion—

    two companions to lovers, a wound and a balm!

    For poetry has no tributary like love,

    when poetry's spring runs dry and a bud turns yellow.

    And none describes love as poetry does—

    the subtleties of what a lover reveals and conceals.

    And poetry is just like women in temperament:

    it grows tender and resists, grows harsh and shows mercy.

    وإن شح فاللفظ الحلال محرم

    If it gives freely, its gift is sweet, limpid water;

    and if it is stingy, lawful speech is forbidden.

    فما دق عن أوصافه فهو مبهم

    The sweetness of its wording races against its meaning;

    so whatever is too subtle for its descriptions is obscure.

    وهمت كما بالحب هام المتيم

    I was captivated by it—in being, essence, and form;

    and lost myself, as the love-stricken lose themselves in love.

    And the wine of rhymes intoxicates me, so I grow elated,

    drunk on it, while my mind brims with awareness.

    I took shelter in poetry's shade after its midday heat,

    after sorrow had nearly taken control,

    and after I had shared with it sleeplessness and slumber,

    and tamed what was unruly in it and would not be disciplined.

    It regarded me as a soul dear to it,

    so it honored my soul—oh, how fine the generous giver!

    and gifted it with pearls from its words.

    So no one portrayed was wronged, nor did an inspired poet stray.

    ولكن سهم الصدق للزيف مؤلم

    Nor did candor's hand tamper with reason;

    but truth's arrow brings pain to falsehood.

    And I kept poetry's honor free of praise for the unworthy,

    and held it too noble to satirize those unworthy of honor.

    And I swear: if I forced it to offer praise,

    and it complied, I would disavow what I know of it.

    For its eloquent words have never accustomed me

    to hypocrisy, even if not a dirham remained in my hand.

    وليس لغير الحب يشدو وينظم

    My tongue speaks openly according to love's measure;

    and for nothing but love does it sing and compose verse.

    And I have uttered it only for those who deserve it—

    one dear to my heart, or a revered, generous man.

    مواقف من يلقى المنايا ويقدم

    For without poetry's noble steeds, battle would not have immortalized

    the deeds of those who face death and advance;

    مكارم من يأسو الجراح وينعم

    and without poetry's noble steeds, generosity would not have immortalized

    the noble deeds of those who heal wounds and bestow favors;

    and without poetry's noble steeds, passion would not have immortalized

    the tales of those who were lovestruck, went mad, and were enslaved by love.

    It endures, while the dominion of kingship and wealth perishes,

    and every edifice besides it crumbles.
