The heart inspired the reed pen with gems,
The heart inspired the eloquent tongue
So it went on studding the lines with pure gold,
To adorn the lines with radiant pearls
ويخطand inscribes أروعthe finest ماwhat شداsang مترنمa singer
ويخط أروع ما شدا مترنم
غردsweet-voiced وأجملand the loveliest ماwhat جنىgathered وتخيراand carefully chose
غرد وأجمل ما جنى وتخيرا
And inscribing the finest that a singer sang,
And inscribe the finest verses sung
Sweet-voiced, and the loveliest he gathered and chose.
In melodious tones it did unfurl
تتفتحunfold الألفاظthe words منfrom أكمامهits calyxes
تتفتح الألفاظ من أكمامه
كالوردlike roses رائحةin fragrance يروقpleases ومنظراand in appearance
كالورد رائحة يروق ومنظرا
Words unfold from its calyxes,
Words blossom from its sleeves
Like roses, pleasing in fragrance and appearance.
Like roses, pleasing in scent and sight
سرthe secret البلاغةeloquence فيin بدائعwonders منطقيmy speech
سر البلاغة في بدائع منطقي
تقديركyour appreciation الشعرpoetry النضيرfresh النيراradiant
تقديرك الشعر النضير النيرا
The secret of eloquence in the wonders of my speech
The secret of eloquence in my wondrous speech
Is your appreciation of poetry, fresh and radiant,
Is your appreciation of peerless verse
ونفورand the aversion سمعكyour hearing منfrom غثاثةinsipidity منطقspeech
ونفور سمعك من غثاثة منطق
تأباهrejects it نفسكyour soul كالحديثlike a tale المفترىfabricated
تأباه نفسك كالحديث المفترى
And your ear's aversion to insipid speech,
And your ear's recoil from worthless prattle
Which your soul rejects like a fabricated tale.
That your soul spurns like fabricated talk
تسموsoar القوافيthe rhymes فيin رحابكyour spacious precincts والنهىand intellects
تسمو القوافي في رحابك والنهى
بكthrough you فيin الفضاءthe expanse الرحبvast تجتازcross الذرىthe summits
بك في الفضاء الرحب تجتاز الذرى
Rhymes soar in your spacious precincts, and intellects
Rhymes soar loftily in your sphere
Through you cross the summits in the vast expanse.
You traverse the cosmos in vast space
ياO سيفsword دولتناour state وقائدand commander جيشهits army
يا سيف دولتنا وقائد جيشه
سلمتmay they be safe يداكyour two hands متوجاًcrowned ومؤزراand supported
سلمت يداك متوجاً ومؤزرا
O sword of our state and commander of its army,
O sword of our state and leader of its troops
May your hands be safe, with you crowned and supported.
May your honored, garlanded hand be well
حلفswore الزمانTime ليأتينwould surely come بمثلهwith his like
حلف الزمان ليأتين بمثله
حنثتwas broken يمينthe oath الدهرTime مثلكyour like لنwill not يرىbe seen
حنثت يمين الدهر مثلك لن يرى
Time swore it would surely bring forth his like;
Time has sworn it will never bring his like
Time's oath was broken: your like will never be seen.
The age has broken its oath, none like you will it see
أنتyou الفريدthe peerless one قيادةin leadership ومهابةand awe-inspiring presence
أنت الفريد قيادة ومهابة
وفطانةand in discernment منهاthrough it ترىyou see مالاwhat ... not نرىwe see
وفطانة منها ترى مالا نرى
You are peerless in leadership and awe-inspiring presence,
You are unique in leadership, awe, and wit
And in discernment, through which you see what we do not.
Discerning what we cannot see
ماwhat المهرجانthe festival وإنand even if تسامىrose high قدرهits standing
ما المهرجان وإن تسامى قدره
عبرacross الأثيرthe ether وإنand even if سماsoared وتبختراand strutted
عبر الأثير وإن سما وتبخترا
What is the festival, even if its standing rises
This grand festival, though lofty its worth
Across the ether, even if it soars and struts?
Across the ether, ascending adorned
والطائراتand the aircraft وإنand even if علتrose high فيin جوهits sky
والطائرات وإن علت في جوه
فسموfor the loftiness قدركyour standing فوقهاabove them بينamong الورىhumankind
فسمو قدرك فوقها بين الورى
And the aircraft, even if they rise high in its sky?
And planes, though rising high in the sky
For your stature towers above them among humankind.
Your stature above them between all creatures
زدناincrease for us منfrom الفعلdeeds الجميلnoble تطلعaspiration
زدنا من الفعل الجميل تطلع
نحوtoward العلاthe heights وتقدماand progress وتطوراand development
نحو العلا وتقدما وتطورا
Through noble deeds, increase our aspiration
Grant us more good deeds aspiring
Toward the heights, and our progress and development.
To the sublime, advancing and evolving
يزددwill gain more بكthrough you الوطنthe homeland الكريمnoble كرامةhonor
يزدد بك الوطن الكريم كرامة
مثلىsupreme يحقis right لناfor us بهاin it أنto نفخراwe take pride
مثلى يحق لنا بها أن نفخرا
The noble homeland will gain greater honor through you,
The precious nation, through you, is graced
Of the highest kind, in which we may rightly take pride.
With a pride we rightly can boast
فإليكso, to you أغلىthe most precious ماwhat تضمholds خزانتيmy treasury
فإليك أغلى ما تضم خزانتي
عقداًa necklace فرائدهits rare pearls تفوقsurpass الجوهراgems
عقداً فرائده تفوق الجوهرا
So here for you is the most precious thing my treasury holds:
To you I give the most precious of what my treasury contains
A necklace whose rare pearls surpass gems.
