بدائع لم تلهج بأمثالها اللها
The breeze of al-Jaha whispered to the ear of reason
The breeze of morning inspired in the ear of rebuke
Marvels whose like no throats had ever voiced.
Marvels unmatched by any embellishment

For necklaces of pearls no oryx had ever worn.
Like necklaces of pearls adorned with moonlight

I sang, possessing but a glimmer of knowledge's reach;
It shone upon me a flash of attained knowledge
Another sees it as the ultimate goal—how exalted it is!
None but the ultimate can perceive its heights

رضا باطل مهما عتا وتألها
Nor am I one whose concern in life
Yet I am not one whose life's concern
Is pleasing falsehood, however insolent and self-deifying it becomes.
Is empty approval, no matter how loftily it's exalted

A soul's nature—oh, may God preserve his character!—
A nature of soul, may God protect its making
A lover of truth sees it as truth's utmost limit.
The sincere see it as sincerity's end

Its wanderings enthralled by its gentleness
And have befriended none but the eloquent man of letters.
Accustomed only to the eloquent and articulate

Through it the bough of poetry drinks in freshness,
By it the branch of poetry is refreshed with vitality
And through it rises a heart that loved and lost itself in love.
And by it the heart that loves is guided aright

That makes fragrant by his sighs what it laments

If touched by any fleeting harm, it does not wound him
Its wording rises above his slander and remains unsullied.
Its utterance protected him from and purified him of blight

It rose in the sanctuary of the two luminaries
For itself, from knowledge's radiance, what bewildered reason.
And from the rays of knowledge formed what dazzled rebuke

So praise be to knowledge, by which it elevated
The minds of people, witless only yesterday.
Minds yesterday confused into clear insight

I chose from my Layla the loftiest of its necklaces:
From my nights it carefully chose the loftiest jewels
Peerless pearls that have neither splintered nor weakened,
Peerless pearls that do not break or fade away

A gift from the heart to him who so often lent support,
A gift of a heart to one who long
And sang my verse, chanting like a camel-driver and extolling it.
Celebrated it in verse, singing its praises
