I think of you, O light of the eyes,
I think of you, light of my eyes,
and ask my heart about you every moment.
And ask about you, my heart, all the time.

I conceal within my breast a love that has taken
And I conceal in my chest a love
my reins in its left hand and its right.
That has taken hold of me completely.

And my longing for you, so you may save me

When the deep darkness of the nights closes in,
When the nights grow long and dreary,
I drift into the labyrinths of misgivings.
I incline toward the maze of assumptions.

And sorrow surrenders me to the turmoil of longing,
Sorrow hands me over to the struggle of passion
in which I battle waves of lamentation.
In which I battle waves of sighing.

For without love, no singer would have sung,
If not for love, no singer would sing
nor would the nightingale have warbled on the boughs,
Nor would joy resound on the branches.
