Poem: The Expanse of Your Book Is Forests and Rivers

    Poet: Muhammad bin Tawq

The expanse of your book is forests and rivers,

and the swell of your voice is waves and seafaring.

O Abu al-Bayan, upon the pages is a song,

joyous, and fragrance and music and birds.

    ففي يراعتك المعطاء أسرار

    Read a little, for the night is smiling;

for in your bountiful reed pen are secrets.

    نأتي فيسحرنا نثر وأشعار

    O Abu Khalifa, we are still pupils;

we come, and prose and verses enchant us.

We come to you as scattered feelings,

    estranged by destinies and journeys,

and wounded by the cares of the written word, so they sought

shade; no folk song or lyre remains.

    Poetry no longer has its Layla and its lover;

so there are no tents, no embers, no fire,

    nor cups brimming with sighs,

nor strings in the rabab today.

Despair enfolds us, except when we are gathered

by a meeting of minds that leaves traces in the heart.

Then longing grows ecstatic in birdsong and rhyme,

which has a tryst with the night and companions for night talk.

Master of my generation, my feeling cannot be portrayed

by these rhymes, nor can thoughts contain it.

And through the days it still preserves

the luster of affection; no troubles cloud it.

    Poem: The Breeze Grew Gentle

Reply by the poet Hamad bin Khalifa Abu Shihab

    سلسالها العذب معطاء ومعطار

    The breeze grew gentle, so verses from you grew tender;

their sweet, limpid stream is bountiful and fragrant.

Affection exalted them, and its luster adorned them

with beauty, so they came as you desire and choose.

You handed them to me in affection's palm—a jewel

whose gleams and radiance outshine pearls.

Through it you restored to literary Arabic its freshness,

after the edifice of ḍād had nearly collapsed.

Never did words embroider a rhyme

without love and selflessness gathering around it.

Nor did a lover's breeze drift through a watch of night

without flowers greeting you with their breaths.

Yours are masterpieces of poetry and literature,

strutting proudly, with crown and laurel upon them.

So be well, and remain a warbling bird for rhyme,

    whose singing other birds envy.

Layla's night companion has not left his loved ones,

nor have night companions parted without fellowship.

Nor have the tents you once knew

vanished, nor the coffee, the cup, or the fire.

Rather, we remain as we were, brought together

in love by history and traces.

We quaff from its spring the sweetest of its pure wine,

sweet, and gather provisions from the fruits of knowledge.
