Are you a lover like me, O pen?

You sing and weep as I weep, and you smile.

If you say, "I have no heart that loves, nor sight

that sees beauty, nor hearing that understands, nor a mouth,"

then how have you shared with those enthralled by the ones they adore

their love, and how do you find harmony with lovers?

And how do you know their confidences when they have not spoken,

and respond to their complaints when they have concealed them?

And reveal what lies hidden, concealed within a soul,

and depict love with clarity, as they have depicted it?

Do the fingertips, or the heart, have an intermediary

that revealed to you what they said and what they composed in verse?

Or does your knowledge of secrets see [what]

is hidden, and do you learn from them more than they themselves knew?

Or is there within you a secret among secrets, kept

for yourself alone, withheld from all creation, O pen?

From me, God's peace be upon you, O pen.

So remain safe, for through you humankind is honored.
