I love you. If only love would aid one who thirsts
I love you, if only love would quench the thirst
With a sip from its spring, whose waters are sweet to drink.
Of one who severs a lip from its delicious spring to drink

I tell her, with poetry in awe of its wellsprings:
I say to her, and poetry is the saline of her eyes
When she commands it, it opens to reveal moist pearls.
If I commanded it to shake off from a moist pearl

Show her, for in your eyes is a secret spring
And is there any sweet drinking-place other than your eyes?
And is there in anything but your eyes a sweet fountain?

For your eyes have left no room in my thoughts
So your eyes have not left any place in my thoughts
For anyone but you at all, whether far or near.
For another, neither from afar nor from nearby

A time has passed, O breath of life, and gone is
An era has passed, oh zephyr of life, and is gone
An era of life that overflowed with poetry and love,
From life, an epoch overflowing with poetry and love

Were it not, then, for love's anguish, passionate longing, yearning, and passion,
For if not for fervor, passion, longing and love
And your eyes, no sin would have been written against the soul.
And your eyes, no sin would have been written upon my soul
