At your service, O rescuer of classical Arabic from bitter contention,

and vindicator of poetry against unsupported claims,

and drawer of pearls from the deep sea of knowledge,

lofty, before which the bearer of froth kneels.

You reminded us of ‘Ukaz and the master poets there,

champions in the fray, reciters and critics alike.

And al-Nabighi, upon his chair, is judge,

in a gathering thronged with people of understanding.

The magic of eloquence upon their lips is music,

whose echo puts the melodious bird's trilling to shame.

Where, then, is ‘Ukaz for us, in its festival seasons,

and the two al-A‘shas, and he who rides out on a sleek steed,

and Tarafa, Ibn Kulthum, and ‘Alqama,

and the two al-Nabighas, and Ibn al-Abras al-Asadi?

Nor were Jarir and his two rivals, when they clashed

in poetry's arena, envious of classical Arabic.

But where is the lord of rhymes, with his foretelling

through his heart what his eyes will see the day after tomorrow?

And he who engrosses people and the world, and fills it,

and engraves resplendent wisdom in hard stone?

But where are those through whom the mother of languages rejoiced,

and those to whom she beckoned: 'Take my hand,

for I have trusted you with prose and rhyme'?

So they sought rain from her, and rain poured down with hail.

    And Shawqi brought lawful magic—visions

enchanting, in scattered prose and arrayed verse.

How splendid are rhymes when perfected

by their master: they immortalize his memory for all eternity.

And if their lofty standing is wronged, they expose

to people the arrogance of the angry ignoramus.

I possess treasures of rhyme enough to fill its seas,

settled, praise be to God, within my mind.

Yet I do not compare myself with those who have passed,

however high I rise: a river is not like a scant pool.

I have readied from them sharp blades that destroy tongues

that have marred the beauty of poetry's face with swellings,

    وساقها الجهل سوقا غير متئد

    through which meter and language pour forth;

and ignorance drove them on without deliberation.

So they mistook brass for gold, and darkness for a flame,

prose for poetry, and a pearl necklace for a palm-fiber rope.

So they advanced, while the winds of vanity hurled them

into the chasms of doom, from the lion's grip.

O vindicator of the language of ḍād against verse's chaos, which has not

been accepted by anyone within the bounds of poetic meter,

to you, a greeting joined with affection,

sung onward by Hamad's heartfelt praise.
